Random IMC tips (1)

Two off the top of my head:

  1. There is a spot very early in the bike (Main St., around the Tim Hortons) where people seem to consistently launch their nutrition. I can’t remember if it is a row of bricks recessed in the pavement or what, but I’ve seen lots of Gu flasks etc. go bye-bye over the years.

  2. Check out the swim exit before the race. The swim start is a sandy beach, the exit, not so much (lots of rocks in some areas).

Anyone else?

1. Yes. It is VERY bad. I launched bottles on the first brick crosswalk, then promptly crashed via endo on the second brick crosswalk. And so began the bike leg of my very first Ironman… It took about 6 stitches post race. Not fun. If you are at all worried about losing your bottles, tape them into the cages with a strap of electrical tape. Leave a tab so you can easily pull it off. The first aid station is quite close, so just stick the tape on your aerobars until you can throw it away at an approved place.

  1. Yes, yes, yes. There is nothing you can really do about this, but it’s still good to know.

My adds:

  1. You all will most likely forget this, but there is a very large pothole just after you go through the traffic light where HWY 97 turns left coming into town. You go straight here. The pothole is very close to where most people will be riding in the right hand lane, and it’s a wheel-destroyer for sure. You will most likely be very tired at this point and close to - and focused on - transition. Just try to remember, it comes RIGHT AFTER THE TRAFFIC LIGHT along Skaha Beach. It would really stink to hit it so close to home.

  2. The steepest climb on the course is on McLean Creek Rd. It’s very short. But whatever your easiest gear is, make sure you are in it. Nothing stupider than hammering a climb so early in the course.

Easy solution - don’t use behind the seat bottle holders. Bottle(s) on the frame only, or aero bottle up front or bottle holder on the aero-bars ala Rappstar**/**Jonnyo

Another addition:

  1. Meet Steve Fleck. You can find him at the Nineteen tent by the lake. You can probably also find him by shining a “nineteen” logo into the sky at night or by wandering around anywhere in Penticton shouting “I’d like to buy a Nineteen wetsuit, can anyone help me?”

he may also be found by following the voice saying:

“You know, back in the olden days…”

kidding Steve.

Yes, I left that out because it could also just as easily lead you to Dev Paul’s house or Monty’s, neither of which is in proximity to the race course…

Strike that one. I WILL NOT be in Penticton. Too much work to be done here in the office( we have to design and prototype our new 7mm suit!! ), and this weekend, MissP and I will be retreating to the cottage for some R & R for me, and a BIG block of training for the Boss. IMH is coming up fast!

JR - Rock it out this weekend. MissP and I will be pulling for you. We’ll have no internet access, so we’ll have to read all about it after the fact on Tuesday next week. Careful pinching the wine from the VIP area! Grab a bottle for me!

As for tips: If you are hurting going up Richter - you are in for a long day!

The fastest part of the course (descending out of Yellow Lakes) is also the spot where you are most likely to have a strong cross-wind. Pay attention, especially if you’re riding a disc.

I’ll second that about coming out of Yellow Lake…and add that the downhill back to town can be an especially difficult headwind as the day goes on.

Don’t forget to look around…IMCAN is such a beautiful venue! Have fun.

Almost 1/2 of the swim will be directly into the sun, which will be sitting low on the horizon. Sighting will be easier with a tinted/mirrored set of goggles.
