Radiofrequency ablation - anyone had this

I’m thinking about trying RA or coolief. Anyone know if this works or have any good/ bad stories about it. I have sharp intermitten nerve pain after 2 minor knee scopes last year and the second one was 5 months ago. My second surgery involved debridement of the fat pad.

Ablation for what? I had an heart ablation for a tachycardia and all went well. After that 9 Ironman and 3 70.3

I did for for a nerve running through my left SI joint. It’s been about 18 months now and nary a hint of pain. Every once in a while If I sit at an odd angle for too long I get a twinge, but it passes as soon as I move. Prior the RFA I couldn’t run more than 10 minutes.

did you have to pay out of pocket for that or was it covered by insurance. I cant’ get a clear answer when I go to the insurance page

I had nerve ablation in my low abdomen for some branches of the femoral nerve as I was having terrible groin nerve pain, I had it done at UCLA with their pain management group, it was covered by my insurance as by then I had been having a lot of steroid nerve blocks into my groin.

I did not have any anesthesia as they want you awake so when they go in you can feel it hit the nerve. Once they push a long thin needle into my abdomen using a fluoroscope to see where they are going and once they think they are on the nerve they inserted down the needle the electrical probe, then they switch their machine on. It pulses the electrical current into the nerve you have to be able to tell them the pain level and hold it as they had to do it for at least 20 seconds, the first time I could only stand about 12 seconds or so as it was extremely painful, their second attempt they were able to get past the 20 seconds.

I felt some pain for a while at the injection site and every once in a while I have pain in the area they went in through the abdomen, unfortunately for me the procedure didn’t work I guess wrong nerve branch. Hopefully you will have better luck with it for you knee but they have to know which nerve is causing the pain obviously, good luck… Hope this helps. LA Rob

I had 2 in a neuroma in my foot. The other things we tried (B12 and alcohol shots) did nothing. I finally got some relief with the RA. First one helped some but not enough so I had a second one. It’s not completely gone but I’d say about 85%-90% better, and I’m good with that. Not the same area as you but I’m glad I did it. I don’t have the electrical shocking pain like I used to.

ETA - it’s not a pleasant procedure. They have to hit the nerve to make sure they are in the right spot. After they find it they numb it and the rest is not bad.

I’ve had 2 RFA’s on my neck. They put me out for that procedure. Helped a lot with the pain. The big negative for me was a long recovery. I felt pretty good in a couple of days, but took about six weeks to get back 100%. I have chronic pain in both my knees, I may ask my pain specialist about a RFA for both my knees. My insurance paid for my neck RFA.
