I’ve spent a bit searching, seems most posts are older & of mixed opinions. Many seemed to say radar for run / jaw for bike.
I am looking for one pair of glasses, I don’t intend to buy multiple pairs of +/- $200 glasses with one each exclusively for riding & running.
I currently have a pair of decent Smiths I’ve been using for a few years, but the polarization sucks (on the lake in Chicago), & I guess I sweat too much, they don’t fit right, or aren’t vented well, b/c they are always a sweaty, foggy mess.
I have yet to try on a pair of Oakleys, but am looking for opinions on the different shapes of Radars and the Jawbones.
Seems the pitch are a bit nicer w/ the frame a touch bigger than path, but I don’t know. Jawbones look nice, but I don’t change lenses TOO often.
I have also looked into Rudy Sportmasks, but it seems they are ultra fragile.
Glasses need to remain fog-free, have ability to change lens, stay on head when looking down in aero, also fit under aero helmet & be able to see w/o much obstruction when looking up in aero position, & fit nicely under a hat/visor for running.
Radar pitch/path/range are different shaped lenses, but they all use the same frame. I have 2 sets of path and 1 pitch for mine. In terms of lens size: range is larger than pitch is larger than path. I’ve owned Jawbones as well and they do have a better field of vision when aero, but Radar generally do fine. Also look into the Radar XL which have a higher nose bridge to address the field of vision when aero. Look at the pro peleton/pro tri field for evidence that regular Radars will do the job very well in most cases.
If you were going to pick between the Jawbone and the Radar I would probably suggest the Radar. Biggest single reason being that the Radar is open on the bottom of the lens. This way when you ride & run if you get sweat on the lens it will drip off. With the Jawbone I would imagine that it would pool up at the bottom of the plastic below the lense.
I actually just got a pair of Oakley Half Jackets. You might want to add these to your short list of glasses you are looking at, along with the Flak jackets. They are open at the bottom just like the Radars. They have interchangeable lenses. I got mine as a present, but they came with 3 sets of lenses which I like. I rode with mine for the first time this past weekend and really liked them.
Definitely have a look at Radar XL Straight Blades…higher nosebridge for unobstructed vision (I tuck my head very low and have no issues), and straighter arms for fitting under helmets. I wear mine for running all the time too. Based on your post though they may be a little limited in lense type…very few options at this time.
i have the Radar Path and Jawbones and if you want one pair of glasses to do everything, then I would say Radar and get the lense that fits your face best. I ran a 10 miler last weekend and my Jawbones fogged. Ran a 1/2 marathon in identical conditions yesterday and my RAdars did not fog.
If you are only going to get 1 pair of glasses and want most bases covered get radar path with the transitions lens. The lens really works well. The path shape works well even though it is the most low profile of the Oakley lenses- it is also by far the best looking.
Jawbones are pretty good as well. Problem with Jawbones is that they are only good when they are on your face. They do not tuck into helmet vents near as good as a radar.
For this reason I always choose my radars when climbing- Jawbone maybe for flatter days.
for some reason, i would always get sweat in my eyes when wearing the jawbones. Thought it was just me, but a friend said the same thing. Got rid of my jawbones and am sticking with the radar’s.
I have a Flak Jacket and a Jawbone and owned for a short time a Radar Path (returned them). Of the three, I’d recommend the Flak Jacket, if the style appeals to you. I’ve never had them fog up on me whereas my vented Jawbone fogs up occasionally when I take a short rest stop (they don’t fog up on me when I’m riding).
I started carrying Giro b/c of how they sit high enough on the face for a TT position and I see so many fit clients with neck pain. The Haviks are the best one of the Giro line for TT’ing. Their other glasses would be ok but not as optimal as the Havik.
depends on your face, i had the jawbone for a couple of days, the bottom of the frame kept rubbing my cheeks.
swapped them for the path and its perfect now.
sounds silly but try them on with your helmet.
As sunglasses now cost ~$200.00, I have yet to buy any, but at some point I plan on buying Oakley Radars, probably pitch lens.
The jawbones are nice, and I like the ability to easily swap lenses, but they don’t seem to fit super tight on my face, and range of vision seems larger with Radars. I also took my new Wingspan into the Oakley store with me, and the tight fit of the Radar frame seems to be best.
I’m still not sure about lens. I like the pitch b/c it’s a bit larger than path, and the range/xl just seems like too much.
I’m still concerned about having a non-vented lens fog up on me, but reviews of Oakleys say this isn’t a problem.
It’s a huge issue with my current Smiths, but I’ll assume that’s because the lenses aren’t coated & the upper bridge smashes against my forehead.
I’ve tried on the Path and Jawbone and I felt that the Jawbone gave the best visual in the aero position, but based on the bulk/size of the Jawbone, I’m steering more toward the Path. I’d also use the Path for running and golfing and I want something light and less bulky when doing either of those activities.
Also, since I have a more narrow head, I’m leaning towards the straight stem option. The regular fit just “bubbled” out too far on my head. The problem is that I’d like a white frame, but the only option for the straight stem is “pearl white,” which, to me looks like it has little pieces of glitter in it. My other option is the “team navy” straight stem, but, again, it looks somewhat “speckled” with black. Does anyone have any real pictures of either frames I could use for comparison? I’m currently considering white frames with blue ear socks and vice versa with the blue. Thanks.
I have a pair of Jawbones in Pearl White and they look pretty cool. A cool look, durable finish, not like the White Chrome that flakes off either. I doubt I could take a photo to make the “pearl” show up as it is very subtle.
