i have a cyclocross race on sunday. my school’s teams kits FINALLY arrived, and i’m very eager to represent wearing my jersey and shorts. however, it will be damn cold, and i would like to protect my knees using tights. i don’t own knee warmers, so that’s not an option.
is it advisable to wear tights under the shorts? could i wear shorts under tights under shorts? obviously, i’d really like to have my school’s colors showing, but if it’s a bad idea, i won’t. please let me know, though. thanks.
It depends on the seams, the fact that you’ll be running might mean some chafing if shorts and/or tights move to much.
I did a long run last winter in 5 degree weather with two pairs of tights on, one loose, one tight pair(withut any kind of pad). the seams rubbed “the boys” raw.
If it’s that important to show the colors they spring for or borrow some knee warmers, otherwise don’t be the slave to fasion and wear shorts under the tights.

good luck in the race

I’m not sure which one you’re advocating… but if it has a chamois it goes on your crotch, if it doesn’t then it goes over something with a chamois… it’s that simple.
Dude re-read the post the first two were personnal experience with tights minus chamois, the last was the recommendation.
but if it has a chamois it goes on your crotch - no shit
if it doesn’t then it goes over something with a chamois… it’s that simple - again no shit, first sentence states possible outcome of bike/run in tights minus pad

What’s with the “tigger195”
I’m not a dude… and was the milk you poured in your cereal this morning sour?!
but I just got home form pulling early morning escort duty for a 3-star, and read a response from a dude-chick-whatever, to a post I made re-stating the obvious
What do you consider cold? Wear your tights over your shorts for warm-up…then:
Basically…ditch the tights.
Wear your shorts, jersey and arm warmers (and glove/socks). Heck, even toe warmers and a headband is fine. Rub either icy hot or a thin layer of vaseline on your SHAVEN legs. You’ll be plently warm no matter the temp if you’re “racing”. Shaving helps the most b/c your hairs aren’t catching the wind, which opens the pores.
If you MUST wear tights, wear them under your shorts as this will prevent them from slipping. But, you do run the risk of chaffing. Be liberal with your chamois cream.
In the future…I’d suggest investing in some biking tights or leg/knee warmers.
I wore tights under shorts every day durring the winters. I never had a problem with chaffing. Just make sure you put them on properly. Most pepple just pull them up like pants. Put them on like a wet suit. Fit the calfs, them the knees, the quads and most important, the crotch. None of this low riding shit. those are made to be worn on the waist. Get them nice and snug. On mine the ankle is always a bit high to make sure that the crotch is not being pulled down.
If your really worried about chaffing, just put on a pair of snug speedo’s under it all.
