Looking for race wheels for 2005 season. I have pretty much narrowed down to HED3. I noticed on the HED website that they have a clearance page which offers discounts on wheels that do not meet HED’s “trueness” requirements.
What are the aerodynamic and performance implications of having a wheelset which is either .031"-.035" or .036"-.040" from true? Is it worth the $$ savings?

AFAIK, it’s quite common for most tri spokes to go out of “true” eventually with time. You’re saving a bit of money by starting with what would likely become inevitable any ways.
You will probably be able to see the wheel wobble, but it shouldn’t affect the performance.
i have a front that’s .032" out of true. you can see it on a truing stand. can’t feel it at all.

It’s really great when you phone a company and the owner answers the phone. Hed offers great service and you gotta love the fact that they publish their aero data.
