Aside from the Triple T event I have heard about, can anyone recommend some other cool triathlons to do in North or South Carolina? I may be heading up there in the spring/summer to visit some friends and would like to take in a race. I know tri-find lists a bunch, but I would like to know if there are any “must do” races in the area.
I haven’t lived there in 5 years, but the White Lake HIM in early May was a good early season race, despite the lack of hills on the bike. The lake swim was one of the nicest I’ve done - clean and clear. Bike is a giant, flat loop - basically find the right gear and stay with it. The run goes through some sub-divisions. Setup Sports is the race organization and puts on a whole slew of races in those parts, so you can probably find many others.
Yup White Lake Half and sprints are great races. Set-up has a bunch of others–usually any of there races is a top notch affair…
Beach2Battleship is awesome.
Lake Logan Oly is held in an absolutely beautiful setting in the NC mountains. The course is in the valley and relatively flat. Very well run by SetUp in early August. Highly recommend it if you are in the area…near Waynesville/Canton.
Toby, what distance(s)?
Check up Set up Events.com for all the races in NC and SC
Ive done most in NC. They took out two of the hardest, coolest races, Duke Half, and the Bandits Challenge Oly.
White Lake Half is def a must do, it a great location. They have changed the run and now do it around the lake. They have a sprint the sunday after the half. They do those on consecutive weekends in May. Some of the popular spints are already sold out (Lake Norman, Tri Latta) Triangle Sprint is a good one, so is the Wilmington Sprint. Over the Mountain Oly is pretty challenging and the regional USAT championship. Lake Logan in the Try Sports Series is a good one too. SC Half is supposed to be good too. Really you can’t go wrong with any set up race.
www.setupevents.com look at the inside out sports series ( formerly NC Series) lots of great races, also the Trysports series
Pinehurst and bandits are great if you like hills, White Lake half is well known great race, B2B is both a half and Full
.
Oh yeah, Pinehurst, a classic.
If you want to really mix things up there is Surf -n-turf in Surf City (Swim, bike, run, bike, swim) Or Kure Beach (swim, run, bike, run, swim), both are technically sprints by distance
.
There is a pretty good selection of races around here. What area of North or South Carolina will you be visiting? What length races do you prefer?

Anybody doing the Winston-Salem Duathlon next Saturday (Feb. 6)? I’m planning to do it, but I’ve been holding off on registering because I’m waiting to see what the weather forecast will look like…
Probably already posted:

Click on SCTS for SC

Some races in NC are already sold out, but anything done by SetUp is great. If interested in any one race, just ask? I have either raced or observed most the race in NC/SC.
The Setup races are good ones, but you should also consider the races in the Finish Strong series at www.fsseries.com. They throw some great races, especially if you’re gonna be in eastern Carolina…say, from Raleigh east. Two great Half Iron races, one in Washington and one on the Outer Banks this year.
And it’s just a little race, but the Lake Kristi Triathlon in Greenville has such a great venue. The swim is in a ski lake in Parker Overton’s front yard and the run is along his 9 hole golf course. He’s known for the boating/watersports equipment catalogs if you were ever into that. Anyway, a great race for first timers and one of the best to spectate at for family. Find it at www.runnc.com, along with other fun events.
And an early welcome to NC to ya!

Looking for a HIM this year. It will be my first and I want it to be flaaaaaat! Have you done either one and what is your take on the course and how well organized?
Both the Washington Half and the Outer Banks Half are new events for 2010. Both courses are super super flat. The guys that run the Finish Strong series are super dudes and know how to put on a quality event. Either one would be a great first half.
I would also agree with the earlier posts that the White Lake Half is also a good recommendation for a first time very flat half.
We’re fortunate in NC that you can pretty much pick a race every weekend from spring to fall.

I may be visiting the Charlotte area later this year. The distance really doesn’t matter as long as it’s a fun race.
over the mountain in kings mountain is close to Charlotte and is a fun oly, run by set up
.
I’ll be at WS Du. I’m going with the idea that really good weather falls on the heels of really bad weather. Next weekend should be great.
