Race number and transitions

I’m getting ready to do a sprint Tri this weekend and was thinking about the best way to deal with my race number. We only have to have the number on the front when we cross the finish. I have a desoto number belt so I was considering either putting the number on after I get off the bike at T2 or wearing it under the wetsuit right from the get go. Any opinions as to what would be best i.e. (fastest, least aggravation ect.) Thanks.

I wear it right under my wetsuit. No problem. Spin it around the back for the bike and around the front for the run.

If all you have to have it on for is the run finish, I’d probably just grab it and put it on as I’m running out of T2 (done that plenty of times). If you need it on the bike, do what RAinBC says and simply rotate your belt.

I’ve never worn my number under my wetsuit before, I’ll have to try that next time…

Same as RAinBC.

Under the wetsuit works if the race uses the more waterproof race numbers. If not, the paper will melt and your race number will fall off -

i would suggest your best bet is grab the belt, number already attached of course, on your way out of t2. clip it on then, and rotate the number to the back or side until it needs to be visible coming in to finish.

wearing the belt under the wetsuit could initially lead to some discomfort. if i wore one under mine, i know it would. my wetsuits are pretty darn snug. and you could rip the number shrugging the wetsuit off.

additionally, riding with the number leads to the chance of the thing flapping around which is a major distraction, and it could rip off while flappin around…bad thing.

I wear mine under the wetsuit, facing backwards. The bib gets softer, being wet, and doesn’t make noise or rub like a crisp, dry one. But I’m seeing more races cheap out with paper bibs, rather than tyvek (Ralph’s Cal. HIM), they fall apart when wet.

I have always (SINCE THE DAWN OF MAN!) worn my number under my wetsuit and have had no trouble with it falling off or even getting very wet.

It is under the Wet suit, so it stays pretty dry… or am I missing something?

I will watch out for cheap paper numbers, though. I guess i haven’t run into those yet.

On a side note I found that if it is one of the “better” numbers made out of the cloth-like stuff (tydek I think…something like that) you should crumble it up nice and tight and then flatten it back out. That way once you attach it to your race belt it is less likely to rub you or balloon out like a sail flapping in the breeze since it will be softer.

Thanks guys, I think I am going to opt for grabbing it at T2. The idea of putting it under my shoes is good. I tend to have a hard time thinking straight when I am pushing hard. ( Where is my bike? How do I tie my shoes? Which way out of transition? ect.) with the number under my shoes I won’t forget it, hopefully.
