Quick help! Bike lube: can I bring it on a plane?

Can I bring bike lube and bike grease on a plane as a check-in item?

Yes…if it is in your checked luggage.

Many thanks! Leaving tomorrow and stressed packing right now. No time to look on TSA site.

I wouldn’t put it in your bike box…I had a friend who had it in there and TSA confiscated it…said it wasn’t allowed on the plane. But they won’t look in your checked luggage for bike grease. I think it’s considered a hazardous material (by the FAA, not TSA).

Good point. If it is petroleum based, I think you are right. Synthetic lubricants (i.e., non-flammable) should be OK, but the FAA/TSA people generally don’t know the difference.

Yeah, when I went to FL, I just put it in my suitcase, they allow some things in there (hairspray etc…) but they scour bike boxes for CO2 cartridges and take out anything like that.

What exactly are you planning to do on the plane?
