Questions about antibiotics and training:

The doctor said I had a sinus infection. Duh.

So, he gave me a decongestant that is already incredibly effective, told me to take aspirin to lower my temperature and a prescription for amoxicillin 500mg capsules, 1 capsule, 3 times a day.

So, my question is: Is it safe to elevate my heart rate while I am on this? The directions said nothing about exercise.

Probably the better question would be is it wise to train with a bacterial sinus infection?

That also, good question. I am convinced this infection is in the waning phase. I feel better, just not 100% by far.

One problem you may encounter is diarrhea caused by the antibiotic. You definitiely won’t want to train through that if you get it.

Yeah you can train and race on ABX. I would wait intill you are feeling close to 100% before I put out a hard effort but you don’t have to wait till your ABX is done. If the Dr gave you a med with pseudoehedrine in it you might find your HR faster then norm and you will dry out so push the fluids.

The best thing would be to rest and get better not work-out and get worse. Drink some soup and get some sleep. Although I am going out for a run with the same type of issue.

cant say specfically but in a some what similar situation in that I have a chest infection and the Dr has given me some pretty poweful antibiotics.

Its been 2 days off the bike and my coach has given me the ok for light trainer rides only keeping hrt low and light pressure on the pedals. My hrt increases significantly when I walk up the stairs! This weekends races ( crit and road race) are now definitely out of the question.

Excellent. Thank you very much. You can always count of ST’ers. Thanks guys, both of you.

Is the pseudoehedrine in the decongestant? it is Allegra-D. Oh, never mind. Duy. I just read the label- yup. It’s in there. I’m a dimwit.

Thanks again!

Tom,

Just remember that sunlight and many amoxicillin don’t mix. Your skin becomes more sensitive and you are more prone to dizzy spells.

I had this last week, which was suppossed to be one of my biggest IM training weeks. I took 4-days off and was able to do a 1:30 run on the 5th day, and I felt better after the run. I was okay to do a 5-hour ride with a 30-minute run in 90-degree heat the next day. This week, I still feel not quite right, and my nose is a bit stuffy at times, but it has been training as usual, and I don’t think the big weekend of training made anything worse.

Dehydration is an issue as well, since the decongestant is drying you out to begin with. Drink lots and rest a bit.

Try acidophilus for antibiotic-induced shits. Works wonders.

I think I’m over mine now. Had it for 2 days. But, I’ll keep that in mind for the future.

I did my first olympic distance race 3 years ago on strong antibiotics due to Lyme’s disease. It didn’t effect my training at all (the bells palsy paralyzing half my face had some effect though.)

Also, watch out for the sun, as antibiotics will make you more susceptible to getting burnt.

i trained for placid last year partly on vioxx. who knew it could kill you? still alive though so that’s good.

I didn’t know that. Thank you.
