Question on electric razors for the head-shaving crowd

I’ve been a no guard electric clipper guy for about a year and a half. I’d like to go shorter, but not shave with a razor (I know half of you will suggest either Headblade, Gillette mach 17, or a disdainfully say a rusty old bic is what you use. I have a patch of really friable skin, and it doesn’t feel good to shave). Anybody use a Norelco type shaver on your head?

Are you wanting to go baby-butt smooth bald, or get the stubble shorter? I also started about 1.5yrs ago, 1st with the #1 guard and now with no guard. I find that all razors are not created equal. The more robust plug-in one that I have at home has a thicker blade than the cheap rechargeable one that I picked up for travelling… it has a thinner blade, so gets the crop closer to my scalp.

I also do not want to go shorter cause I don’t want to shave my head with a razor, seems like a PITA…

I use a variety of Remington or Braun foil shavers and have been doing so for many years. The trick is to do it often, or better said not wait too long. Daily it is fairly smooth and fast but 2days plus it is cumbersome.

I’d like 1-2 days out from a shave with a razor. I’d go over it every other day.

If you do razor every day or every other, it seems quick. I used a Gillette Fusion the one time I went slick bald, and no nicks. Just that one patch was irritated for 2 days.

Have you found one that holds up for a long time but doesn’t break the bank? I’d like to keep it under $75. I found this on Amazon, and it’s well reviewed, but $125 is a tad steep.

For the last 5 years or so, I’ve been using a Braun Series-7 shaver for both head and face - I simply give the whole nugget a once over every morning.

I’ve been happy with it, so I haven’t had reason to expplore other electric shavers. When I first started to shave my head, I tried using a regular blade - and quickly discovered that route was not for me. I looked like the Hellraiser dude by the end of that failed experiment. I don’t have the patience or early-morning (pre-coffee) coordination to pull that off.

An electric shaver isn’t going to give you the “shiny” bald head that a regular razor can, but I’m not intested in that anyway - the electric razor cut is plenty close enough for me.

Cheers, Chris

You want Andis hair clippers. I use their t-outliner trimmer. It’s a commercial product. Same one your hair stylist has. It is made in USA.

I’m jumping in b/c I am interested but I’m a razor user because electrics are so dang slow. I tried one for a couple months and I can shave my head and face 3x in the length of time it takes to use an electric

Sorry about the sensitive skin b/c the razor is super quick and easy if done regularly

Maybe you stick with a blade for most of your head, and just touch up that one patch with an electric? I take this one when I travel. It’s about $35.

Once it starts getting warm I shave my head the full monty - smoother than a waxed bowling ball.

For me its a 3 step process:

  1. I use a cheap Walmart (Wahl Brand) hair clipper without any attachment. That gets me down to 1/4"
  2. I use an electric shaver to take it down to almost skin level. I very much prefer a corded unit with rotary blades over the battery powered foil types. The corded has so much more power and the rotary seems to pull less on the longer hairs.
  3. I finish with shaving cream and a trusty Schick disposable razor.

All this is done free of charge by my kids, with the wife occasionally cleaning up a few straggler hairs with the razor.

A blade for me too but I’m a Shick guy. as far as a shaving gel goes, Gillette Fusion is ok but I find “King of Shaves” gel or shaving oil ( just one drop for whole face or head ) is better.
Also I shave in the evenings and if I shave after a run or indoor cycle, i.e. very sweaty, then the hair on either the face or head is really soft and just so easy to shave.
Last point, I shave in the shower, and yes I know that’s a waste of water but I find the warm steamy atmosphere makes it easier as well.

I’ve used a Wahl Balding Clipper with no guard for 10 yrs now. I imagine the only way to get closer would be a Bic and no point in the effort and potential for ingrown hairs, cuts, infection, etc. the Balding shears are leaps and bound better than the crappy clippers I used before it.

Same here. I started out with clippers and guard, then no guard, then went straight razor. The razor every couple or three days is way easier than clipping. As far as blade type, I’ve tried a bunch and now just stick with the Gillette. I tried head blade which was really nice but the “push” blades ended up with some good cuts if you aren’t careful.
