What did you move to? I’ve gone to 2 different running specialty stores and they both couldnt help me because my foot is flat and wide. The only shoe that was comfortable for me is the beast. They are a bit heavy and since Im now lighter than I used to be and running much faster than I ever have I am looking at moving to a new shoe. The wide back end of the beast is what works for me, any other shoes out there with this wide back that are a little lighter. Or has anyone tried the '07 Beast they are supposively lighter but do you notice the difference?
have you tried the brooks addiction or even adrenaline? at 10ozs the adrenaline is very light but still more stable than most others offerings.
I have old Brooks Beasts, Burn and Adrenaline models. I also now have 07 Beasts and a few pair of the new Brooks Trance 6’s. The new Beasts and Trance have the “mogo” sole which I assumed was only marketing, but… I highly recommend the new Trance. I’ve run a few trail and road races ranging up to marathon distance, done lots of training and I love those shoes! I bought the 07 Beasts b/c they have the same mogo sole and wanted to give them a shot. They feel a lot like the old Beasts but my legs are less beat up after long runs. My legs feel best after runs of any distance in the Trance shoes. Like you I have very little arch and used to use Beasts almost exclusively until losing a few pounds. Good luck.
Do you wear orthotics?
i would say this though: the trances were not stable enough to correct my overpronation. YMMV but try them out on the treadmill first.
Try an Asics 2100 or whatever # they’re up to now, in a 4E.
The Asics wide last is one of the best. It truely is a wide… and the 4E is like a snowshoe. I used to wear a pair around the shop in a size down and a 4E width cause it let my toes spread out and was something I sold. (I run in shoes that I make, doesn’t look good when your managing running stores)
I went from the Beast to the:
NB 765 - not enough shoe at the time
Minuno Alchemy 3
2 pairs of Brooks Addictions
4 pairs of Kayanos
DS Trainers for racing
2 pairs of 2100 series
jaretj
.
Pearl Izumi - Vitals…
I’ve switched from the Beast to Saucony Grid Trigons. I have both the “ride” (cushioned) and “guide” (stability) versions. I’m really happy with them, they are lighter than the Beasts, don’t seem so over-controlling, and last almost as long. My feet aren’t too hard to fit, so I don’t know if they would fit you or not.
You can usually get a deal on last year’s Trigons for around $59. I have bought the “old” models for the last 3 or 4 years (probably 10 or 12 pairs total), and haven’t found anything I like as well at any price.
First, try the Brooks Adrenaline and see if it corrects your overpronation. If it does, you’ve got a great shoe. If it doesn’t, the Asics 2120 won’t offer enough support either. Make sure you trust whoever is watching you run to give you honest feedback about whether you overpronate. After the Adrenaline, try the Asics Foundation. Lighter and more flexible than the Beast, but almost as stable for most people. If you can find one, test out a Nike Cesium – very light but very stable for some runners and very uncomfortable for others. YMMV.
While you’re at it, try this for three weeks: get a clothespin and set it up so one “handle” is on the ground and the other “handle” is under the ball of your foot. With your heel on the ground, open the clothespin by pressing down on the handles with the ball of your foot. Try it seated first, then standing. Increase your reps and sets as you get better at it, and you’ll develop some of the foot strength you need to support yourself instead of relying on the shoes to do it for you.

I used to wear the shoes for “Bigger” runners when I was starting off and heavier. I have found that with my large feet, the Nike Air Pegasus works great due to their cushion and neutrality. I went through many shoes to reach the shoes I currently wear. If you are looking for less control and great cushion, try them.
I have flat feet also. I used to wear the Beast, but moved to the Adrenaline and could not get used to the shoe. For me it seemed to have to much Stability. I finally found a shoe that works out perfect, the Brooks Dyad 3. Soon to be Dyad 4.
I ran my 1st marathon and raced all my races (plus a decent amount of training miles) in Nike Air Cesiums. Went to the Glen Ellen Running Co. if you’re near Chicago. They’re the lightest motion control shoes out there. The big lump under your arch feels weird at 1st, but “disappears” when you start running. You have to try a pair to really know what I mean. It was a $100 gamble, but I loved the shoes- they’ve been retired to gym shoes now. I’ll buy another pair this year for racing. Currently training in Saucony Grid Stabils- legs feel good, but the soles are quite tall. Cesiums were low to the ground. I’ve heard the Superfeet insoles help us overpronators when used in stability shoes- same effect as a moderate motion control shoe (so I hear, haven’t tried).
Have not tried either but I will look into, thanks.
Thanks All I will look into some of these suggestions.
