…do you also shave your eyebrows? I recently shaved my head for the first time and my GF told me I look absolutely silly and that I should shave my eyebrows off to balance out the look.
I’m afraid without eyebrows, the sweat will get into my eyes which would really sting.
Make sure you get some sun. I’m assuming you’re a white guy. (Just because of the “silly” comment.) If you have dark hair then your scalp is probably pretty pale. That coupled with the stubble will give your head a nice attractive grey look. You need to get away from that to see if it looks any good. So keep it shaved for a while and get some color on that dome of yours.
Hopefully it’ll look good on you. I just end up looking like an idiot. It’s a shame too because a shaved head is so comfortable and simple.
Make sure you use sunscreen! That white dome will burn in about 2 minutes and you’ll have a horrible itch/burn and then flaky skin. Swimming is awesome, though! I’m about to do mine for the fourth time.
I second this advice. I’m a white guy who shaved my head a few years ago. Although I liked the look in general, I did it at a time of year when my face was tan. The “tan face / white top” look was a bit dorky :-). I also grew a goatee to go with the shaved head… can’t explain why, I just thought it looked better to have some facial hair to offset the bald top.
As for shaving the eyebrows, I can only imagine that your GF is pulling your chain. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy with shaved eyebrows. I would have to imagine it would look absurd.
P.S. I found that a totally clean shave was actually more trouble than it was worth. Now I use a #1 guard on a pair of clippers. It is every bit as comfortable as a fully shaved head, but much easier to deal with.
Well now, there’s a good point. Sorry I forgot to mention it. Burned heads suck. That, and they look most uncool. You think your girlfriend is laughing now???
for the white dome, what I did was get some sunless tan cream. The stuff out now looks natural, just use enough to add some color. Don’t try matching your face tone. I used it once, the day after my first shave, by the time it faded, I had natural sun doing the trick.
I also switch to using a beard trimmer during the off-season. But for me there is a psychological boost from smooth during the race season.
My eyebrows are blonde/white, so I’ve never had an issue with them.
If you are like the typical hairy male, your super-bushy eyebrows may be in stark contrast to your glistening skull. My recommendation: trim the eyebrows, but don’t shave them smooth. I found that the hair clippers with the blade extended as far out as it can go (but don’t use any attachments) gives a pretty close shave but still leaves just the right amount of hair for the brows.
It also sounds like your GF doesn’t dig the shaved head, if this is the case, then I send my condolenses. Most women will never understand the benefits of a shaved head (until you shave her’s in the middle of the night- I’m j/k, don’t do it).
I’m glad I was born when I was - and spent my youth when long haired heavy rock bands ruled. I really don’t understand why anyone would shave their head unless they’re joining the marines. I’m 53 and still wear my hair longish. Hey, when you’re my age and still have a full head of hair - why not flaunt it.
I have had this said to me. I usually have a ‘marine’ do, but if I let it go I look like Tom Hanks in Castaway after about 6 weeks. At 36, people are telling me to make the most of the hairy look while it lasts, but I just hate training/racing with long hair. Major pain.
I don’t buy into the myth that shaved hair won’t grow back. First of all, how does the hair knwo it is shaved. The root is still in there prodicuing away. Teh slight change in gravitational pull is not enough to send any kind of signal. If that were the case, the hair on my face would have stopped growing in after shaving it for 15 years twice a day, wouldn’t it? People told me not to shave my head because it wouldn’t grow back, then they told me not to shave my chest because it would grow in thicker. Whatever.
I say try lightly bleaching your eyebrows with a decent product, and if they still look goofy, shave em off. They’ll grow back sooner or later.
I’ve been shaving my head for a good 10 years or more. I used to Bic it, but now I just use the shortest setting on my clippers. It’s easy, takes 10 minutes, it’s low maintainence, its much cooler while working out, and I haven’t paid a barber in a long, long time. Plus, women like to rub my head…an added bonus. I’d have a very full head of curly hair if i let it grow…it was down to my shoulders in high school. I’m probably one of the few men who wishes I’d go completely bald so I’d never have cut my hair again. A shaven head definitely isn’t right for every one…you have to have a nicely shaped melon to do it. Also, it looks strange if you have a big birthmark on your head. A guy I knew didn’t realize he had one and looked like a freak when he shaved his head. It couldn’t grow back fast enough for him.
I’ve never seen someone besides lex luthor and whoopi without eyebrows. To me, that’s just freaky…though it adds something to lex’s persona.
What is it with all these myths about your hair either not growing back, or growing back thicker if you shave it?
