I noticed lately that my left knee is moving laterally at the top of my stroke. This doesn’t seem to happen at all on the right knee and stops if I hold my left in a bit closer to my TT than my right? For all you bike fitters, what does this mean? Is it a problem (there is currently no pain)? And how would one “fix” it?
I’m assuming when you say improper you mean that one is rotated? I’ll take a look tonight but last time I checked they were both in the same position relative to one another…
I have noticed though that my pedals have a lot more play in them than they used to even though I have them set tighter. Do you think that worn cleats could be causing it as my cleats are pretty damn old? How often do you replace cleats and/or pedals as a rule of thumb?
I’m no fitter, but sounds like you should try a LeWedge. I use two on my left shoe and one on my right. I had been compensating for tilted feet / ankles by pointing my knee inward and it wobbled a bit. I find with the inserts that I am not using any musclepower to stabilize at all anymore. Worth a try…
“my left knee is moving laterally at the top of my stroke.”
as has been stated, take 2 LeWedges and call me in the morning. fat part on the medial side of the cleat (the inside of your shoe, that is, the side closest to the bike).
Mr. Slow–You may have missed a post where I thanked you for this exact same advice from your piece on LeWedge. Exactly two. Only trouble is I find that I had been compensating for so long I have to focus on relaxing into the proper position. Of course, a bunch of people here didn’t think I should use a wedge without X-rays, and the advice of a team of orthopaedists and physical therapists working 'round the clock on my case. These are probably the same people who “do not start an exercise program without consulting a physician”.
The other thing was shaming me into turning my seat post around, raising the seat, moving it forward and getting rid of my risers. Much more power. I can’t quantify it, because there has been a lot of training “alongside”, but I know it was immediately 15-20%. Of course, I didn’t start out with a lot.
