Has anyone tried both? I have the swimmers snorkel and when I put my head down I almost invariably get a ton of water in the snorkel. Thanks.
I have the swimmers snorkel. You have to be a little careful about your push offs but I think it’s a better alternative. My coach recommended it over the freestyle…she said I would be having problems sucking in water if I got the freestyle. I use mine mainly for kick sets.
Yeah that’s what I use mine for. Thanks for the reply.
The freestlye version wraps a little tighter to the head and if you tuck your chin too far it will top fill fairly easy. The advantage though is that it is more stable when you do the flip turn.
The standard version is a little taller and with your head neutral should stick up about 4" above the water. Down side is that where the top section attaches to the mouthpiece it loosens over time and moves around a lot when you flip. The check valve also lets water in for a lot of my swimmers if they dont have a good head position.
I just moved to the Tyr snorkel and I think I like it better than those two models of Finis. It is slightly taller. There is no check valve. Its very stable when you flip and push off and the headband is comfortable. The tube is more narrow so it does slightly restrict air volume. The mouthpiece is fixed and wont align perfectly for everyone.
Finis has come out with a new model for 2015 called the glide which looks promising. Design looks more like the Tyr.
The team I coach has been using about 40 of the the standard for about 6 years now and we bought several of the freestyle version. Most of my swimmers dont like the freestyle. In our HS program, we do a lot of laps w/snorkels
Thanks!
