Question about flats

So…was riding along on Nantucket this afternoon, minding my own business, when a honeybee (endangered!!!) flew into my helmet and started crawling around on my scalp. Hit the brakes hard, and rear tyre blew out. Whoops, left my tubes and cartridges in CT, so I checked out the tyre while waiting for my (very kind and indulgent) wife to pick me up.

Walls seem intact, and there was nothing puncturing the tyre - I’ve never flatted from braking before. For you serious cyclists out there, is this unusual? And, should I replace tyre as well as tube?

Oh, for what it’s worth, the bee never stung me, but wanted to stay on my bald pate; I had the devil’s own time trying to get it off my head. He finally flew away, much to my relief.

did the tube actually blow ? if so, maybe you had a slight pinch of some kind going, you hadn’t changed that tire recently had you ?

braking can overheat your rim and cause a flat…but that usually only happens on major decents when you brake the whole time (not a good idea)…i doubt that a quick brake would cause a flat but you never know.

No - actually a pretty old tube that I’d ridden at least a few hundred miles on. And, yes, it was a very loud blowout - not what I’ve experienced with a typical puncture.

then i think i’d agree with Anders, must have been heat-related…
