I hope someone here can help with my technology issues. I had my Quarq spider replaced October 2010. I had my Ordu replaced due to damaged frame in May 2011 and parts moved from old frame to new. I have continued to have issues getting computer heads to work with Quarq with new frame. Wondering if this is a magnet or some other issue?
My goal is to use Joule with my Quarq. I have a cycleops speed sensor that was working on old frame and moved to new frame.
Garmin 500:
Works fine while riding outside
On trainer inside will show watts but not record time
On trainer outside, will show watts and record time on some rides but not others
Joule 2.0
Picks up Quarq watts but doesn’t record time and then goes to sleep after ~5’
If I put PT trainer wheel, switch to PT on ant+ power choice, it will pick up PT watts inside or outside on trainer
Looking for what I need to do to get both to work head units working both inside and outside on trainer or on the road with Quarq.
For the Joule, what device have you selected as the one to activate recording? When I first got mine, I had your same problem with the Quarq/Joule combo. If you select HR strap, if you forget it, you’ll have the same issue. Use the menu on the Joule to select the activating device.

I don’t use anything ant+ other than power meter…never have used HR strap but I’ll double check it.

Same thing happened to me. Use speed instead of HR, that way if you don’t have your strap it will still start. Still think they should just have a damn start/stop button…
Point is, you have to choose an activating sensor - speed is your choice as the there is no separately selectable cadence sensor (it’s part of the powermeter) and you don’t use a HRM.
For the Edge 500, try turning off auto pause and also turning off GPS when you are instead. My guess is that sometimes when it gets a GPS signal inside it starts/stops recording. Outside it works fine becuase it has a GPS signal the entire time.
For the Joule, as other posters shared the only way to start/stop the Joule is with Speed or HR. If you really want the joule, I would suggest buying a Ant+ speed sensor and using that to start/stop it.
I’ve gotten my Garmin 500 to work on trainer. Thanks for everyone’s tips!
I have a cycleops speed/cadence sensor that worked with my Quarq and Joule on old frame. Currently my Joule will pick up my PT wheel not my Quarq on new frame.
