Quarq spindle length issue

I have just received a sram red Quarq crank, bb30 to replace my FSA vision trimax bb30 crank . The only problem was the one I received has an extremely long spindle, around 88mm! Now I am not sure if this is normal on a Quarq bb30, but all the bb30 cranksets I have owned have been the standard 68mm in length. So now i have an extra 20mm to deal with.

Is this normal? Is there a way to make this work? What am I missing here?

Ok don’t worry, your crank works. If you bought it directly from quarq, you should have two spacers that are 11 mm in width in the package. Simply slide one on to the spindle, insert spindle in bb, put on other spacer and attach the spider.

The reason the spindle is so long is to accommodate a BBright BB which has an offset 79mm bottom bracket width and 30 mm diameter to help build the frame stiffer and widen the bearings (more stiffness) so instead of having 2 different Bb30 cranks they used the spacer system to achieve fit.

Let me know if you have any other questions. If you don’t have the spacers, call quarq.

Thanks Zach. That is what I figured. Do you know if all of the Quarq Sram red cranksets use the longer spindles? Also do you know if I need to use the “pre-load adjuster ring” for proper installation?

Can’t remember which side the preload goes on for Bb30 but can check my instructions to ought if you don’t have them.

And yes, all that I know of come in the 90 mm spindle. Not sure if there is a Crank PM on the market that is BB30 specific (I.e. 68 mm spindle). Would be interested to find out though.
