Quarq spikes/drops

Anyone else get stuff like this? I just changed the battery because it was a lot worse 2 days ago, right before it went to and stayed at 0/no reading.

This was a constant effort except for the break at 15 min to turn on fan and at 49min to recover from SVT

morning bump, nobody else has these consistent power blips?

Your picture is too small for me to read. Do you get any spikes/drops in cadence?

I do occasionally get spikes in my quarq power data, but there is always a corresponding spike/drop in the cadence values that the quarq uses to calculate watts. One of these days it will happen enough to warrant re-gluing the magnet.

You’re doing this indoors, right? Anything thing in there that might be causing electrical interference?

I just started using Quarq. So there’s plenty more experts than me, but have you calibrated your device lately?

wireless powertap hub? home wi-fi?

i get these outside as well , but not as many

Yeah…what he said ^^^

You’ve already checked the first thing I’d check, i.e. the battery. Next on the list is the magnet.

the size of pic is not relevant, it is the spikes(80-300w). pretty sure you can see those

cadence did not appear to drop off in all, some yes, but not all. magnet not glued, it is the specer ring mag from quarq on the road bike)

see my reply to him

i figured blurry pic was good enough, didnt need to power numbers to show up per se, just the spikes.

mag is the behind cup quarq supplied ring mounted mag

Do you have any spares of the loose magnets? If so, try stacking one onto your current magnet (assuming there is room) and see if that makes a difference.

If it doesn’t, then it’s time to call up Quarq and take advantage of their stellar customer service.

i sent a word doc with this to them in an email already. just picking ST brain here as well.

I have 2 of the other magnets, I could add one, just have to remember to make sure it is secure, though I dont think if could fall off outdoors unless hit by a vehicle.

wireless PTs don’t interfere do they? The Garmin 500 sometimes gets finicky in trying to decide which it wants to zero before start of ride.

I dont seem to have this issue when out training on the TT bike, but that training wheel is not a PT.

The magnetic attraction is WAY more than enough to keep it secure. It’s not coming off of there unless you WANT it to come off.

Interesting data points. Swap the TT training wheel onto the bike and repeat your ride in the same location and see what happens.

BTW, why 2 PMs on the trainer?

Of course, I shouldn’t be one to ask about running more than 1 PM at a time, huh?..

because the used up tire happens to be on that wheel and being a lazy engineer ™ I havent changed it out. Until I get a second quarq, I keep at east 1 PT, have 2 currently.

your suggestion is what another buddy has suggested and will be tried this evening.

i could claim redundency for when the quarq battery dies on the road

I think I just emailed you from Quarq tech service as well. I was curious if the drops / spikes happen outdoors as well. We’ve seen this behavior recorded on the Garmin units when there is wireless interference indoors such as a router, keyboard, phone, etc.

I had the exact problem you’re describing with a '12 (new model) Red Quarq. After eliminating all the wireless devices in my workout area, the problem persisted. Quarq was very helpful in helping me to eliminate the headunit (Joule) as the source of the problem by sending me a Garmin. The problem persisted with the Garmin and after studying the various files I recorded (nice, long constant wattage intervals), Quarq concluded that the powermeter was the source of the problem and sent me a postpaid label to return it to them for repair/replacement. Now that my season is over, it’s headed out to N. Dakota for repair. I’ve got 3 Quarqs and this is the only one I’ve had issues with and customer service has been outstanding - contact them directly.

Yes you did and I replied, and yes, I have had these outside as well, that is where I first noted them and asked about it and sent pics of magnet location to be sure it was where it needed to be.

it also went from reading higher than PT to lower than PT recently, but is only -1.51% of calibrated weight reading.

It happens outside with and without PT wheel as well. Just checked my records

I’m having very similar issues. I didn’t think about other wireless devices having an effect - I have my cell phone, a wireless keyboard/mouse, and my wireless router all nearby when I ride on my trainer and I get lots of power drops on my Quarq. This morning’s ride looks like this, even though I didn’t stop pedaling at all throughout the workout (the first image is a screenshot from TrainerRoad; the second is my Garmin 910 data in Golden Cheetah). Do you think this could be from wireless interference, or should I contact Quarq? I took the battery out, wiped it down, and replaced it, and I haven’t gotten any low battery warnings from my Garmin. The Quarq is pretty much brand new - I installed it on December 7.

or should I contact Quarq?Yes.

i am still trying to track down the issue myself. replacement garmin 500 just sent out to me today, so next week, if i am not busying skiing all week in our projected 16" of snow tomorrow

edit: i turned off wireless router and still had issue. but seeing as it occurs outside as well, i didn’t expect that to change. new quarq doing samething, btw
