Quarq Riken or Elsa internal accelerometer

Quick show of hands - how many Quarq Riken or Elsa users have ditched their cadence magnet and are relying on the internal accelerometer for cadence and power? Need to swap out my BB and tempted to throw that away now that I did the software upgrade on my Riken.

Of those who are running without the magnet, any problems at all? Spikes/drops/funny readings?

Cheers,
Rich.

I have the Elsa and never even installed the magnet. The accelerometer is just fine. No issues at all.

No magnet. No issues.

Riken, works just fine when i switch between bikes, only one bike has the magnet and i see no differences when on an ERG trainer where power can be controlled.

Quarq Elsa. I ditched the magnet over a year ago without any issues.

I never installed the magnet when I got my Riken.

I have had it for almost a year and have had no issues.

Timely question since I sent in a Cinqo and a Riken is on the way back. The bike that will get this PM has a BB ring with magnet. If the magnet falls off in a ride will it just smoothly and automatically switch over to using the accelerometer? Or should I go ahead and just remove it now while the crank is off. (I’ve had the magnet fall off only once while using the Cinqo in the past couple years.)

I was going to just leave it on and not mess with the bottom bracket to take the ring off.

I also have an ELSA on another bike, but it also has always had a magnet so I don’t have experience with what would happen mid ride.

I thought the whole point of those PMs was to not have a magnet
.

Mine came with a magnet, but the instructions said it was optional, so I never installed it. Everything including cadence seems to work fine without.

You don’t need the magnet. It works great

Removed BB magnet from Riken when I switched bikes, no issues since.

only time you might really want the magnet is if you are checking your slope. I can get by without magnet doing that if I remove battery and reinstall it and then quickly do slope check(about 50/50 on getting through process) so one bike with and one without

I just tape a magnet to the BB for those rare instances where I need to check the slope. But you most definitely need the magnet for Qalvin to work properly.

ST delivers the goods, thanks everyone.

And, fwiw, as the epicenter of hearing complaints about any sport tech gadget/thingy out there - I’ve yet to hear a single complaint about the accelerometer based cadence option that Quarq introduced.

Except, as jeffp mentions, that you can’t check or adjust the slope in Qalvin without the magnet

It gets a little annoying when you’re the power meter ‘expert’ on a team with a good deal with the Quarq distributor so your team mates come to you for slope checking and adjustments…

They’ve been aware of this annoyance for a while now and so far no word on a fix. Not like quarq…

Removed the magnet from my Elsa when I upgraded the firmware last year. I’ve had no issues.

and on my bike, no way to get a magnet in there for checking without removing crank
.

I think the latest firmware (v24) is around a year newer than the firmware where the introduced the AxCad magnetless feature (v21). So yeah, so far a year without fixing it or any word on a possible fix.

What is probably just as sad is that slope checking/adjustment must be a little used feature since they haven’t done anything about it.
