Quarq reading EXTREMELY high: help?!?!

On my roadie, I have a Rotor 3D. This bike is on my trainer much of the time and when ridden on it, I strictly use power data from the trainer (Powerbeam Pro). In prep for an an upcoming race requiring a road bike, I peeled my roadie off the trainer and began hitting the roads with it…go figure! Calibrate the Quarq as I always do and have done w/ both of my bikes for a couple years now. The calibration number, after each calibration at the beginning of several rides now, is showing well into the 1,000’s sometimes into the 10,000’s! Of course, my power is then very high during my ride and as much as I would love to have an AP or NP in the 400’s, I know this is flat out wrong. I do the typical backpedal for 4-6 times, and poof, I get normal #'s in the upper 100’s to 200’s. However, after a while, not sure how long, they drift upward to that 400 zone if not more. Happens over and over throughout each ride.

I have some new, spare batteries buried somewhere, but can’t seem to find them right now. I will try a new battery, but I am not losing any numbers nor is the signal ever dropping.

I called Quarq on Friday, but guessing they are taking a looong weekend as no one answered.

I did check the Quarq troubleshooting section, and this specific problem is mentioned, but they say to call:) I do not have a 3rd party sensor. The entire bike is damn near spotless…i.e. no grime on the crank, spider, etc.

Magnet is good w/ consistent, accurate cadence readings on my Garmin.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Spend the $4 and get a new battery. When it gets weak, the numbers get screwy. Make sure there is not excessive resistance when spinning the crank backwards or any lateral movement in the crank (i.e. nothing has seized up or loosened up). If you get the very high number with the calibration after replacing the battery, you may be looking as some messed up strain gauges (i.e. it needs to be replaced). Quarq customer service is great and can help you out quickly provided you have eliminated these obvious fixes. I bet they could fix/replace your unit within a week if worse comes to worse.

Hope this helps.

Check the torque on the chain ring bolts and try a battery but with zero offset number that high I would really be worried about the health of one or more of the strain gauges. The kind folks at Quarq will definitely get things sorted quickly once you call after they’re back from holiday.

Good luck,

Hugh

Update: New battery installed. New bearings installed. Old ones on the DS were BAD (forgot to mention that previously). Cleaned entire crank and reinstalled. Checked torque on all chainring bolts. House and bike temp are 68-70 degrees.

Fired up Garmin, calibrated, -12,206. Tried again, -10,000. Did it 10 more times w/ turning off Garmin, turning it on, backpedalling, etc. Ranged from -10,000+ to -6700. Strangely, it was falling each time and then seemed to level off at that -67-6800 level mark.

Guess I’m making the call tomorrow and will race w/o (accurate) power:(

Hugh, thanks for the advice. See my post above.

I apologize no one was able to get back to you last Friday. Please call our office tomorrow (after 8am Mountain time) and our customer service team will get you taken care of as quickly as possible.

Hi Mieke

Sorry to dig up an old post, but I’m experiencing the exact same issue with my quarq. Obviously, it’s Friday evening already here or else I would try calling you guys.

My quarq was working fine till yesterday mid ride when it started having lots of dropouts. I changed the battery since the old one probably had a good 300-400 hours of use.
My zero offset is generally around 50-150, but after chancing the battery…it started going up to 6000’s…then -20,000 to +32000, etc.

Power reading made no sense…for about half an hour, it did read consistently high (compared to my PT on the same bike) by about 50-60W.)…then it died and kept spiking up to 1000-2000W.

I’m going to remove and retighten the chainrings tonight, but if you have any solutions for this scenario that you can share. That would be great.

Thanks.

I had he same problem about a month ago except after a rainy ride. Quarq had me remove the chainrings, clean thoroughly, and reinstal using a torque wrench. Then, they had me losen the star thing under the battery, retighten, and bend up the arms. Finally, they had me do a hard reset with two pennies in place of the battery and put a fresh battery in. The said it may take a few rides to settle in. For the next week or so, offset was all over the place with readings still screwy. After that, it’s been rock solid with very consistent offset numbers.

Thanks! I’ll try that.

What do mean by “bend up the arms” ? I don’t have the quarq in front of me so I don’t know if i have a “star thing” under the battery either.

I have an old s975 version…not the new riken/Elsa ones.

I appreciate the input though… I’ll try this for sure.

I’ve had that happen 3 times, and all 3 times Quarq told me to send the PM back under warranty.

Before sending it in they had me try a new battery and hard reset, but those failed each time.

Hi,

I no longer work at Quarq, but it sounds like your power meter is broken with zero offsets like that. You’ll have to call Quarq next week and see what they say. If you have an old S975, try bending the battery contacts up a bit. Perhaps they got “squished” down while changing the battery. That might help, but if not call Quarq and they might be able to help you out.

Mieke

Well what do you do now? There are many of us who have long history of working with you and Quarq. Inquiring minds want to know!

I made the tough decision to leave SRAM/Quarq a while ago in June 2014. I’ve been working with my dad and brother on the family ranch that I grew up on near Sturgis, SD (just down the road from Quarq) and spending a lot more time with my daughter.

Here’s a couple of pics from the ranch:

Awesome! Now that you mention leaving I think I recall hearing about it a while back. Good for you, seems like an excellent choice!
