Quarq power meter help

Can anyone help with an issue with my Quarq Riken power meter. No garmin unit (Garmin 500 or 910xt) will pair with the power meter. I’ve preformed the self test recommended on the quarq website and the LED does not blink. its a solid red LED light.

I’ve put this in the shop several times and it works for about one to two rides then doesnt pair up. I have no idea what the problem is. It just doesn’t give out any power or cadence info after several rides. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a trek speed concept 7.0 if that is any help.

have you called quarqs service dept?

Their customer service is awesome. I am of course assuming you replaced the battery recently?

it’s a brand new battery. I’ve contacted them but i guess they aren’t open on saturday mornings.

is the firmware on your Garmin up-to-date?

Yeah, all the garmin firmware is up to date. The strange thing is, the power meter worked fine last night on a indoor trainer ride. Take it out this morning and its like it died over night. I even replaced the battery after the mornings ride. And nothing. I’m guessing the entire meter is going to need to be replaced.

Have you tried a hard reset, where you use the battery edge to short the battery contact star to the side of the battery slot?

Did you try shorting the battery? That’s what Quarq recommended to me when my Elsa battery died quickly once – it’s been fine since then. It seems to “reset” the device. Just take out the battery and touch the battery to the two contacts in the battery holder for a second. Sounds like you may need a new battery, too.

Do you have Duotrap sensor on the bike? If so, have you removed the cadence magnet from the crank so the only cadence signal generated comes from the Quarq?

It shouldn’t matter, the Garmin will prefer the PM’s cadence over the duo-trap or Garmin GSC-10.

I agree that it shouldn’t matter, because It’s supposed to prefer the PM’s cadence, but one of the first things that Quarq support has someone do when using both is to remove the speed/cadence sensor’s cadence magnet. Because the OP noted they were riding a SC, we know it’s likely that they have a sensor in addition to the Quarq, so it’s best to eliminate this possibility.

I understand, but this is a problem with the PM, not a head unit reporting/recording/reception issue.

Hi hghldr08,

This morning I had the same issue with my Quarq Riken (red light on, not blinking, and the PM not being recognized by the head unit). I removed and inserted the battery, but it didn’t work. I didn’t try a hard reset yet (I’m not home now).

Did you manage to solve your issue?

Thanks!
Andre

I just took it back to the bike shop that installed the unit. They had to end up doing a hard reset on the system. Not real sure how that is done. But since then its worked fine. I think the guy at the bike shop called the Quarq help number and they walked him thru the process.

Thanks!
I saw some pictures on how to perform a hard reset on older units. I’ll try it tonight.

Did anyone figure out how to solve the solid red light issue? Called my local bike store and they have not ever had the issue. Tried to reset it by putting batter in backwards, but that did not work either. Left a message with SRAM, but it is Saturday. Searched on web for 1 hour, and this is the only thread I can find on the light staying on.

Hi dcasandman,

I follow a picture that I found on the internet to use the battery to reset it (basically connecting the + and - connectors with the battery edge). I also replaced the battery. After that, it came back to normal.

I just had this problem with my ELSA. One picture showing how to do the hard reset is here:

Just wanted to post my experience with this problem.

I ran into the red light remaining on this morning. It occured after cleaning my chain, which for whatever reason triggered this.

I went and picked up a couple new batteries and called Quarq service. I was told two interesting things. One is that when the red light remains on, it is an indicator that the battery is dead or low. The battery has enough power to turn on the red light, but not enough to boot the PM. The second interesting thing is another way to perform the hard reset. If you stack two batteries and try and put the cover on, it will hard reset. You won’t be able to screw the cover on - but it will trigger the reset.

So i had to play around with this a little bit, but I think i was able to get the reset performed. Inserted the new battery and after a few minutes the PM appears to be working correctly again. I am able to link via Garmin and through the Qalvin app.

The true test will be whether or not the battery lasts or if it drains quickly after a few days. That seems to be the problem that is encountered by others. So i will post further information if that appears to be the case.

Hey guys, experiencing this same problem too unfortunately on my elsa rs (only 3 months old)

My light will come on once the battery is screwed in, go out for a second then stay on. I have a garmin 1000, it picks up the power meter but when i try calibrate it literally does not let me click on the button and no power units are displayed. I bought two new batteries and still the same thing.

I emailed quarq and got told that it means the battery is “old” and that i should buy new ones and perform the hard reset, also making sure the screw in the battery case is on tigh and everything is ok in there too. The guy i spoke to sent me the flickr photo already posted here which i thought was a bit unprofessional? considering i’ve paid 1800 australian dollars for this.

Anyway, i hope maybe i’m doing the reset thing wrong, would someone be able to post a hi res more instructiona photo or video of how to do this maybe?
