Quaker Oats breakfast bars " Zero Trans-Fat" BS?

I am a food ingredient goober, so when I read the zero transfat plastered on the box, I get excited that maybe another snack food may be added to the ever so short list of good tasting treats. I peruse the ingredients list and low and behold about 4th down the list is PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED oil of some kind.

Whats up with this??? I thought partially hydrogenated IS trans-fat, or a form of a transfat? Am I missing something? I would like nothiing better than to eat several of these quality food products but I am stearing clear of partially hydro anything. Until someone can put me at ease with the no trans-fat thing, I guess it’s back to eating potted-meat sandwiches

You are right…hydrogenation = trans fat. That being said, foods may qualify for “zero transfat” status under FDA or Health Canada laws if they are under a certain percentage. This applies to cholesterol too. Lots of cholesterol free foods actually have a bit of that stuff, but qualify for cholesterol free under the law. The law also permit trace amounts of mice mice hairs etc in most foods as they recognize that most plants where food is processes are not rodent free !

I think of there is less the .5g/serving of trans-fat the product can be call trans fat-free and have a 0g in the label (if they list trans-fat).

edit
Cheerio’s are OK, just looked and no hydrogenated oil, I was mistaken. There is modified corn starch but that is ok, I thought it was modified oil of sorts.

Yikes, I have been eating cherios mixed with my breakfast oatmeal for months now ! I guess they are going out the window !

Check the health foods stores for cereals similar to Cheerios. You can find most foods that you eat now made with no hydrogenated oils, but they will be another brand and perhaps slightly more expensive. I love Cap’n Crunch, but I quit eating it. Found two substitutes – Puffins, and Panda Puffs. Both are organic, no hydrogenated oils, $2.99/box. Good stuff.

Are you talking about honey-nut or one of the other sweetened versions? Original Cheerios has no mention of Hydrogenated oils. I’m reasonably sure of it as I eat a couple of boxes a week!!!

I was wrong about cheerio’s, just checked the box. I fixed the post above so as not to spread false info.
