Quad tear?

think I’ll go see the doctor tomorrow, but if anyone has any ideas, suggestions or comforting words -feel free to comment.problem:started to feel pain in my right upper thigh, front side,4inches below waist, during a 1h base run on saturday.today, not good.didn’t bother cycling, but 15mins into a run it started hurting, got worse, forced me to try and change my stride and hurts real bad walking, squatting and is tender on palpation afterwards.and I have an ironman distance race on saturday.

Not a doctor, but doesn’t sound like a quad tear (at least not a bad one).

When I tore mine a few years back I could barely walk… so the fact that you got “15mins into a run” is a good sign.

No amount of training is going to help you race better on Saturday at this point, so I’d just stay 100% off the leg. I would even ask the doctor if it would be appropriate to get a full leg brace so you can minimize movement entirely.

You need to take some immediate actions:

  1. Stop the (potential) swelling of blood being flooded to the damage by putting on a bandage.
  2. Put on ice, for the same reason as 1.
  3. Total rest (i.e. as much as possible) for the injured leg for at least 48 hrs.
  4. Then start doing excentric excersises and try swimming and water running.

I had a small tear of one of the quadriceps muscles a while ago,
and I was back on the bike after a couple of days. For safety
reasons (A race coming up a month later) I stayed off running for
ten full days. Now it has been almost two months and I am almost
fully recovered, it is just the explosive muscles that are not yet responding accurate, yet that is normal the doc told me.

Race on Saturday? I would not if I were you, yet if you have the stamina immediately to stop when it feels bad in the leg, well you probably could have a go.

I had a femoral stress fracture in February. I’m no doctor, but that’s what it felt lke, and that’s basically how it presented itself.

thanks for the answers. the race went ok. I did no running up until the race and was quite anxious, but it didn’t bother me at all during the race. might have been a minor strain, then.

but, unfortunately, today I hurt the very same spot. much in the same way.had some sensations in the right thigh all the way, and right at the end of the run it felt as someone had punched me in the thigh. now: it’s sore again. could it be a pull that renews itself`? or tendon inflammation? voodoo?
