Q-Rings on single-speed MTB

Anybody installed and successfully used a Q-Ring on a single-speed MTB (with horizontal dropouts - no chain tensioner)?

Wondering if it’ll work…

A tensioner is required.

Sheldon Brown uses biopace shimano rings on his fixed gear bikes.
If you send me a 42 I would try it out.

Crap. That’s what I figured. Didn’t even dawn on me until about 3 hours after I ordered it.

Why would a tensioner be required? Unless I forgot a lot of geometry at any point in the rotation the same number of teeth should be engaged. To double check watch the RD as you rotate the crank, does the cage occillate?

I bet you are right.

Yes, the read derailleur oscillates, which is why I do not believe they can be used on a fixed gear or singlespeed without the use of a tensioning device. The movement on the inner 39T ring is so subtle that I hardly notice it, so using a 34T MTB middle Q-Ring may actually work … but this is just a theory.
