I understand you’ve had a lot of success as a tri coach but, just out of sheer curiosity, how did a football player become a triathlon coach??? Understand you’ve taught anatomy and physiology, but I have wondered how you ever wound up in the tri world, just solely out of curiosity.

Cheers,

Eric

Eric,

Whilst at Loughborough University a long long time ago, injury in Football (American) led me to get involved more seriously in a sport that “went in a straight line”.

Fairly quickly I decided to get involved in coaching and “cut my teeth” with Loughborough University Triathlon club (this is several years before Loughborough became the home of British Triathlon), this meant concurrent to participation and doing a post grad biomechanics research contract …

a) becoming a qualified coach
b) writing sessions for some very very fast folks (ITU competitors)

Later followed working with individuals globally and Leeds Bradford Triathlon club in UK alongside coaches such as Simon Ward and Jack Maitland whilst I worked in “corporate world”. I made coaching a full time role circa 2008.

Regards

David

Ah, I see now, thanks for providing this additional background. I know that James Haycraft thinks highly of you. Also, you are clearly British since you use the word “whilst”.

Thanks,

Eric

Just a side note…had the pleasure to run at the Paula Radcliffe track while in Loughborough working with a startup company in semiconductors/electronics based in the incubator park there. Great to hear your path on arriving at triathlon! Best of luck with Lionel and the rest of your guys!

How about we do a Q&A right here. I’ll start it off.

I’ve heard you like to bake, it’s rumoured that muffins are a personal fav. What muffin website do you frequent and why?

Mark, I’ll indulge you once and once only

Orange, Cranberry, Sweet Potato, Bacon & Parmesan Muffin Scone Thingies…Beekman Cranberry Orange Scone mix, cup of flour, half tsp baking powder, sachet yeast, two eggs, big splash of braggs amino, handful grated parmesan, 5 rashers of cooked bacon chopped up, pinch salt, half cup water, half cup cream, two small sweet potatoes cooked and mashed up and cooled…mush all together well, portion out into a muffin tray, stick in oven at 425F for 12mins or so…allow to cool. Done!

I don’t think you should be searching for “muffin” websites…
