I have a set of HED Jet 6+ wheels for rim brakes. But my new bike has disk ones.
Is it possible to convert the old wheels and put disk brakes on them?
(If not, what’s the equivalent version from Hed with disk brakes, I don’t see Jet 6+ anymore on the site)
Thank you.
Probably not advised, as the spoke count is higher in disc brake builds.
The Jet RC is the rebranding of the Jet 6+. But interesting that HED no longer seems to be offering disc brake versions of the Jet. I guess the Vanquish is their disc brake offering.
Can you convert them? Yes (rear) and no (front). The reason is that disc brakes require crossed spokes to efficiently transmit braking force to the rim without windup (this is the same reason for crossed spokes on the drive side of most rear wheels, but often not on the front wheel. There are a few wheel makers who have come up with other solutions, but not many). Because HED rim brake clinchers uses an alloy rim with carbon fairing, and nipples go into the alloy rim, the holes in the carbon fairing have to be aligned with the alloy rim in a way that corresponds to the original lacing pattern. So a HED front, designed for low (18-20) spokes that are radially laced just won’t build into a stable disc brake wheel. The rear are build 2x (I believe on both the drive and non drive side, although some I think were radial on the NDS), so could potentially be re-laced to a disc hub. I know that the stallion (28h) rears are 2x/2x, so that would definitely work and likely build a better disc rear. If you had a pair of rear rims you might be able to turn it into a disc front and rear, but it is probably just a better idea to sell the old ones and buy new ones.
P.S. If you are selling, and they happen to be a stallion build (20/28 spokes f/r), I’d be interested in buying them for a tandem build I’m working on.
