Continental Grand Prix 4000s tires bought months apart from different sides of the world each have two holes that look like bubbles scooped from the tread rubber, corresponding to pointer arrows on each sidewall beside the letters TWI. The holes don’t penetrate completely through the tire, but the tire must be more vulnerable in the two spots. What purpose do they serve?
tread wear indicator
once you no longer have those holes
the tire is done
.
And after 6485 manufactured tires, they have saved enough rubber for the 6486th.
Conspiracy.
Yeah the first time I saw those I thought, at first, that I had already punctured my brand new tire.
Hahahaha! It always comes down to the bottom line.
Funny! I thought the same thing, except it was more like “What the hell do I keep running over that gives me these defects? Look, it’s there on my front, too!” Then it dawned on me, but not for awhile.
Has anyone been told that there is a direction to the tread pattern? An LBS guy told me this and I called bs (but under my breath). Of course, both of my tires were (and still are) apparently on backwards.
I asked the same question about 2 years ago I seem to remember. Felt a right idiot when, I seem to remember. either Jordan or Jack told me what they’re for.
some tires have an arrow for directional but it is bs. doesn’t matter.

While were discussing continental…
WHY DO THEY MAKE THE TIRES SO !@#$ing hard to install (when brand new)! I swear its like they purposely make the tires 4mm short just to play with us.
only hard when your wheel is a little tall too =)
the good thing is it makes it harder for them to come OFF in event of extreme cornering, flat tires, explosive flat tires, etc

I was told by a Michelin rep that the arrows are only there because people kept asking which way was forward and it was easier to put the arrow on than it was to keep answering that question.
Made me laugh.
