I am in the process of purchasing a set of Zipp 404 or 808’s. Why are the prices for a set of brand new 404’s (2010 model) on ebay so much cheaper than in the stores? Are they different in some way?
Having bought and sold on eBay many times, I think you could find Zipps 15% less than what you would pay retail.
I also have alot of experience buying and selling on eBay- both entire bikes, bike parts, and non bike stuff. I just picked up an 808rear/404front combo (in separate auctions) for around $1000. Both already had near-new tires on, and both were in “gently used” condition- exactly as described (both sellers had great feedback).
I bought this set knowing that I would not have any warranty from Zipp, but since I mainly use them for road races, theres a decent chance they will be crashed out before something goes wrong with them. I do, however, have insurance on them and other bike stuff through State Farm.
I could be wrong, but even having purchased second hand, Zipp may give you a crash replacement price if something goes wrong with them? Again, I dont know for sure, but for less than half the price of new, I figured I would save big bucks and just assume that I’m “on my own” with no factory support. Ok with me.
There are also other brands, like Easton, with wheels like the EC90 available new on eBay for about 50% off retail- a killer deal, if you just accept the fact that the manufacturer will probably not warranty them.
Also, it goes without saying, but experience on eBay is vital- I have done a thousand or more transactions on eBay over the last 10+ years, and I always pay with a credit card through paypal, going through the links on the actual auction, etc. Accepting a money request from the seller’s “other email address” might be perfectly legit but you also forfeit Paypal’s buyer protection, etc. It pays to read through eBay’s rules and guidelines, and obviously check feedback thoroughly.

So if you crash your used Zipp wheels, you expect State Farm to replace them? This insurance does not exist. Period.
He is probably saying if the wheels ever were stolen (along with his bike) then he has insurance to cover them.
I don’t know about where you are but it exists here. You can get a policy the covers bikes and race wheels, theft or damage (even crashes in a race). Same as a car insurance policy.
Could you tell me who you use for that policy? Thanks
i’m in bermuda (4 year work contract). i don’t use it because i have not brought my race stuff over. i was told about it by the local shop who said it was offered by BF&M.
