PSA: This is not how you cross railroad tracks

Local guy on Sunday, a couple of hours after I turned left just before this section. Always go perpendicular to the tracks.

Ah damn, that sucks. I hope no serious injuries beyond the ego.

I get nervous going over tracks in the dry, might have a panic attack in the rain with anything less than 40s on my gravel rig.

I expecting more skin sliding across asphalt with the wet pavement. Assume he’s all ok?

He’s okay. Wasn’t going that fast, and wet pavement (or so I’m told, having never myself crashed) should be less sticky. I think he was more embarrassed given that his Strava ride posting said something about “don’t tell my wife”

This is the big reason riding on roads with streetcar tracks sucks.

With the tracks coming over the road at an angle like that, if there’s a car/truck on your left, there’s no way to approach those tracks even close to perpendicular, (without slowing down/stopping and letting them pass), as you’ll basically have to cut across the lane to do so

I’m more worried that I’m gonna just stop there and wait for the train :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I’d lay my head on the railroad tracks
And wait for the Double “E”
But the railroad don’t run no more
Poor, poor pitiful me

If you take the line this rider did, you will crash. So, in order to not crash, you take the lane early, forcing any following cars to wait behind you. You then move right and quickly left (I would have my left arm out and down, signaling “don’t pass” as best I can) across the tracks.

Here’s the intersection:

Normandy Road is a closed military road (Naval Weapons Station Earle) that cuts across a large swath of Monmouth County. I’ve never actually crossed this intersection, although I’ve crossed Normandy Road on the six other locations it had grade crossings. This intersection is lightly traveled, I believe.

Keep the front end stiff and you can go over angled tracks but you have to be vigilant and lock in.

Or do a quick little wheelie?

dont mean to be a dick but how embarrassing is it to crash like this as an adult…

Uhh… :grimacing:
