Short story kinda long but was diagnosed with arthritis in right knee after seeing Doc about leg pain at night. Turned out had stress fractures in ends of tibia and femur AND found the arthritis as well as torn meniscus at that time. Had the HA chicken shot and has worked for 5 months but starting to get some discomfort back. Doc stated the possibility of a PRP shot- wanted to take advantage before all cartilage is gone and then no option for PRP.
My question is for those that have had the shot- success? (I know this is dependent) but really asking about recovery time and returning to training. Have seen conflicting reports so asking those who have actually been through it.
I had a PRP shot after a patellar tendon tear last year along with ESWT weekly for 3 weeks, he gave me one shot in the tendon and a second in the joint itself targeting early onset arthritis on some meniscus damage. I was non-weight bearing for 3 days, back on the bike after a week, jogging after 10 days and running at 2 weeks. I ran a full IM 6 weeks after the injection and was more worried about the injury than actually dealing with any pain. I was back to full run volume about 2 months after the first injection.
In my opinion the procedure performed as expected. The knee is better than it was before the injury and I’m strongly considering going back for my shoulder. It is far from inexpensive, but I’ve been very happy with the results.
I went through what you are going through, I have had success with Hyaluronic acid shoots! I liken it to sand paper, right now its 80 grit and the acid makes it feel more like 220 grit. I have been getting the shot once or twice a year and I can totally feel the difference.
I had great success with HA chicken shot as well, be it my first one but so far so good. It has kept me running. I am just curious to those out there about the PRP shot as my doc stated that shot would not be effective once the cartilage is all gone- I still have some left so to try and enhance/keep what I have
I had PRP twice in my knee but for severe IT band irritation. I had excellent results, but remember the Dr. saying it’s extremely hit or miss and is highly dependent on the type of injury being treated.
I had the same issue. My knee pain was so intense I was unable to sleep. I went with Regenexx stem cell and PRP method. All aren’t the same. My Doc injected my Femur, Tibia and meniscal cartilage. It takes about 10 weeks to feel totally back to normal with no pain at all. I was cycling and swimming two weeks post op, 3 months to start running again. You should look it up. Thumbs up here!
