Protection for Utah Bikers?

A few weeks ago, I posted a story about Utah implementing a new law that allows for motor vehicles to pass bikers by no less than 3 feet to the side. I was happy about the legislation, but wondered how the crap they’d enforce it…looks like they might be onto something here…not perfect, but it’s better than nothing!

Two words… camera-phones  Just take snaps of offending drivers and email them to the police…

So far, I haven’t noticed any more room being given - but then, I don’t expect the average UT road user has heard about the law (I am unsure whether the average Utahn is capable of reading…)

That law is already on the books in California. I’m regularly grazed by cars and taxis on my commute through downtown San Francisco. I think it’s there in the event they squash someone, obviously they violated the 3’ rule.

On Friday I passed a woman trying to create her own 3’ bubble by periodically waving her left arm out into traffic so the cars would at least pass her by an arm’s length. She damn near clotheslined me as I rode by. This was a rider who should have both hands on the bars at all times. Welcome to bike-to-work week folks!

Where were you in St. George? We missed having you there blazing by us on yoru bike.

Mike

I didn’t sign up before it sold out…maybe next year. We did want to go as spectators, but never made it over to the expo area…sounds like it was a good race, though! Congrats on your first tri, BTW!

check out www.sfbike.org. I think that’s were I found the link to the vehicle code related to bikes.
