Prostatitis - yippee - anyone else?

For the past month I’ve been having increasingly weird symptoms in my lower abdomen. Increasingly frequent urges to void, but with an empty bladder. Decreased stream, decreased volume. Sitting or lying down makes me feel like I need to pee immediately. Stand up, it goes away! (try to fall asleep with the urge to pee). No difficulty starting, no burning. I have been extremely uncomfortable lately, with slight relief today after 2 days of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

Been to a few docs over the past 2 days - no infection in bladder, no infected prostate, but enlarged. PSA 0.7

I think I had the same thing last Spring, but not as severe, and it went away on its own. But the past 2 weeks I’ve been riding in the aero position getting ready for White Lake this weekend - and of course I’ve rolled forward on the saddle from the sit bones onto the sensitive part - right below the prostate. I’m sure that has exacerbated the problem.

Looking forward to going back to my road position to say the least. It is supremely comfortable on the SLR saddle - only my sit bones touch the saddle. But with those aerobars…

I gotta believe there are others out there with the same issue.

The joys of the prostate.

I recommend getting a urologist who will give you a series of several digital massages while you are on a course of antibiotics. Just taking pills won’t fix it. You really need both.

Deal with joy and assume the position.

My massage girl will do that if I ask nice.

I’ve been living with Prostatitis for a long time and unfortunately there is no known cure for it so do not waste your time and money and learn to live with it.Somedays will be worst than others depending on your immune system and sometimes it will completely go away for couple months.

It is quite common among the sexually active 35-55 year old males and the good news is you do not stand a better or worse chance to become prostate cancer. It has nothing to do with the cancer.

Eventually you wil get use to minor discomforts and will be more or less comfortable with it.

Good Luck.

I’ve had it once or twice. Not easy to get rid of. As I understand it, if it is not infected, it is not prostatitis. What type of drugs are you on? Bactrim?

For relief, try a warm (hot as you can stand) bath at night. Also, changing sexual habits (more frequent or less frequent) can sometimes help. Drink cranberry juice. Keep your nether regions clean–that can be the source of the infection.

Yes, Bactrim. I wouldn’t let the doc put me on Cipro or any of the fluoroquinones because of their association with tendon rupture. Clean? I’m Mr. Squeaky.

i’ve been on every drug known to man including vioxx (thanks doc) for my prostatits but with no avail. one thing, however, did work. short story.

training for placid in 2004, i developed an urgent need to pee and stomach pain anytime my ass was on the saddle. i was up 6x/night peeing as well. i couldn’t ride for 3 months and was about to cancel my season when, as a last resort, i went to an accupuncutist. it wasn’t the treatment but this “medicine” she gave me from her “pharmacy.” i have no idea what’s in them - it’s written in chinese - but i was back on the bike in 2 days and haven’t has a recurrence since. i still pee more than the avg bear but it doesn’t affect my life. and best of all, i can bike. pm me if you want more specifics. oh yeah, i also went to paul levine for a bike fit after i was “cured” and he helped find a position that put me more on my sit bones and less on my prosate. hope this helps.

Been there, done that.

Make sure your saddle isn’t too high, and that it’s turned a little to the side. You should NOT be sitting on the sensitive part down there, but rather to one side of it.

Another thing to consider is that if you are on decongestants for allergies, like Claratin D, it can do funny things to your prostate.

I hadn’t heard of the fluoroquinolone association with tendon rupture - is that well-documented? Any idea on aetiology?

I was on cipro a few weeks ago. I looked up the side effects on the web and a weaking of tendons and the like was listed.

Sure enough, I developed some lower leg problems after two plus years without trouble. I blew off the cipro within a week.

I don’t know if the cipro was the cause, but it sure got my attention.

Yesah buddy,

Had to take an entire sumer off of the bike. Got a hobson seat for a saddle and adjusted my position to be more roadie like. It keeps it at bay except for the really big miles.

Funny thing is, if you show up at a urologist with symptoms of epididymities or prastatitis without signs of active infection, they have no idea what to do with you. I did find some info somewhere on non-infactious epididymitis, apparently seen mostly in cyclists.

I found a local urologist who also is a cyclist. Can’t say he held the keys to the kingdom, he just said I needed to quit fooling around with it and stay off the bike and out of the pool for 3 months to let it heal completely.

It was tough, but from October to January of 2003 I did neither of those things. I was miserable being out of the pool that long.

But by January my symptoms had subsided, I changed the swim trunks, changed the bike position and saddle and ever since have been able to keep it at bay. It will start to bite back when I put in some big miles for a race but never like it had been.

hey kev in md, i was able to run and swim with my prostatits even at its worse - and believe me, sometimes it left me curled up in a ball with pain. just wondering why you couldn’t swim or run.

Why would swimming bother that?

I had epididymitis to go with the prostatitis apparently the water set off the cremasteric reflex and it wouldn’t let go. So over the course of an hour or tw oit became an aggravating factor.

Please tell me that someone has taken a full round of either cipro or levaquin WITHOUT suffering side effects. I just finished 35 days before finally reading the side effects. I have never been so scared in my life. They say some may not show up until AFTER the pills are stopped. Great.

That side effect is rare and has really been overblown. The quinolones are an effective antibiotic for prostatitis as well as a host of other infections. Don’t sweat it. There have been hundreds of thousands treated for both short and long term periods of time without suffering that side effect.

As stated above, I understand the side effect is rare. If you have stopped taking it with no ill effects, I wouldn’t sweat it.

thanks guys. i took 35 days and threw away the last five days today after reading this crap. I had been feeling some pain/burning in my foot and an unexplained hamstring pain for four weeks, but never associated them with the levauquin until tonight. I hope any damage i’ve done is reversible.

I don’t know if my problems were related to the drug, but they worked out in about four weeks regardless.

Good luck.
