Prostatitis? UTI? = Men, help please? Docs?

WARNING… GROSS DESCRIPTIONS BELOW…

From searching the forums, there seem to be many people on this forum who have had prostatitis. I recently came down with some funky symptoms that I thought were an STD even though it had been awhile since I had any sexual contact, but the tests for all STDs came back negative. The doctor also did a prostate exam and said everything felt fine. I’m only 26. He diagnosed me a 7 day round of Cipro, which cleared everything back up. I took ALL of the medicine.

Two weeks later, the same symptoms came back. The symptoms include frequent urination (but lower in quantity), irritated urethra (can tell from the outside), very small amounts of discharge from… you know where, and I had minor soreness in a testicle for a couple days (that’s gone away and never came back).

I went to another doctor Saturday as my normal clinic wasn’t open. I told him everything that happened with the other doctor, my symptoms, and the whole story in great detail. He asked if I had any lower back pain or fever, and I said no. He said that it was probably still a UTI that didn’t fully go away from the Cipro. He also mentioned it could be prostatitis, but that would be unlikely since my prostate felt normal during the first diagnosis, and that I have no flank or back pain. He went ahead and perscribed me Bactrim for 10 days (with one refill - not sure yet if I’m supposed to take refill). He also gave me 3 days worth of a UTA (urinary tract anesthetic). They took a urine culture and it came back “normal” today. The nurse who called told me the doctor still wants me to finish out the Bactrim, and if I don’t see significant improvements by Friday to give them a call.

I was wondering if any of you guys with prostatitis had any symptoms like this, as I feel like I’m just having meds thrown at me. The only discomfort I ever feel on the bike is fatigue related. I’m not exactly sure how bad prostate pain would be or how it would feel, but any soreness I get in my back I can stretch out (just tight muscles). I ride an Adamo on both my road and tri bikes, so there should be no pressure on that area (never have numbness, either). I know the urinary symptoms seem to mirror prostatitis, but the lack of other pain and the "discharge " doesn’t seem to mesh with it. At least I know it’s not an STD!

Thanks for any help!

Sounds like you are just going to a “clinic” and yes, your are being treated empirically for what you likely have.

Me, I love our specialist system  I’d get yourself to a urologist if you don’t see any improvement within 2 weeks. Oh, and a probiotic like yogurt would be a great idea right now after a week of Cipro and now Bactrim. You are going to be cleaned out after this and diarrhea is soon to follow …

Been there. Started around Valentines day. Drove myself to the ER in the middle of the night. 10 days of Cipro followed by a month of Bactrim. Hang in there. Finish all the meds. Took a while for things to feel normal.

Go to emedicine and read about urethritis - men.

Sounds like you clearly have urethritis - nothing else gives you a urethral discharge. Yet usually you do not have urinary frequency with that…

Testicle sore - likely mild epididymitis.

Re: STD’s - tests aren’t 100% sensitive and they don’t test for everything.

Nml prostate exam = prostatitis unlikely. Nml urine culture - not UTI.

For urethritis - tests usually only include gonorrhea and chlamyida. There are at least 3 other common causes. Not sure how well Cipro and Bactrim cover these.

I bet you have a non-chlamydia/non-gonorrhea urethritis. If you continue to have problems and don’t get a good result with your regular doctor - you could see a urologist though a decent primary care person should be able to solve this.

Good luck.

FWIW I had a few bouts of prostatitis in my 20s. I associated several incidents with taking prescription decongestants and dehydration.

Never hurts to drink cranberry juice.

…did you nail any scanks…that’s the only way to can exclude the STD. The usual therapy for prostate is a month of therapy, and as mentioned before Cipro is a preferred choice, not bactrim.

Go see you usual doc…
