Prostatitis and Pools?

Has anyone heard whether or not you can get prostatitis from swimming in a pool? I have seen a couple of references to swimming in a dirty pool and prostatitis on the web but not a lot of info. I went to the doc today and he thinks I might have it – confirming with some tests. I know the prostate can be irritated by cycling but I haven’t been cycling much and I always ride on my sit-bones. They just flooded my pool with chlorine and other various chemicals last night because it was getting “cloudy”.** **

I’ve not heard of that being a cause. I’ve had prostatitis a couple of times and was never sure how I got it, but it definitely wasn’t from swimming in a pool. It can be difficult to get rid of unless you stay vigilant.

What do you mean by stay vigilant? Taking your antibiotics every day?

Yes, and having a doctor give you a proper follow-up exam to make sure it’s gone.

The first time I had it I had a great doctor and treatment went smoothly. Then he retired. The second time the doctor didn’t do a correct follow-up exam, told me it was gone when it wasn’t, and it took much longer to go away.

The follow-up exam should have you pee in a cup, then the doctor should do the digital exam, then you should pee in the cup again. It’s only when the second cup is clear that it’s gone. My second doctor only had me pee in the cup the first time and did not do the rest of the exam. Because I wasn’t totally clear it came back seemingly more intense than at first and was resistant to the antibiotic. A second antibiotic gave me an allergic reaction and I ended up in the hospital for several days. All of it was unnecessary if the doctor had given me a proper exam. Now I know better and if it ever happens again I will know what should be done.

I realize this could be a serious thread, and in that light, I have never heard anything that could relate these two things before this thread. That being said, could peeing in the pool lead to this? I seem to remember a movie where someone said something about not peeing while immersed in a jungle stream “because the worms swim up your dick…” or something like that. “Sniper” with Tom Berenger, I think. Could chemicals or some other toxin get in that way?

This is sort of tongue in cheek, but the question begs to be answered…

That’s actually a really good question, but in my case I don’t pee in the pool.

This link, http://www.answers.com/topic/prostatitis, mentions prostatitis caused by swimming in polluted water.
