IM NZ course record (8:15), pocketed $9K at HyVee today (looks like he has plenty of speed), ran down Juan Pelota with a blazing run split 18 months ago in the heat of Panama. Double Olympic Medalist…what’s left for this guy to do. He’s probably going to let Macca do all the talking on race week, fly in under the radar, put the hurt on the mile 10 Palani climb on the run and everyone will be looking at his back from then onwards…Maybe he even swims with Andy Potts in Kona?
Yup … and let’s not forget that great youtube clip of his finish at the ITU New Plymouth … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo-nbnw8zSI
I really hope Bevan has a great race in Kona because of my New Zealand heritage. However, I was given an interesting stat by a friend that nobody who has won IM NZL or AUS has come back to win Kona. Cameron jumped on the podium. But no winners.
Yeah,I’d say the trophy will head down under again…
Yes, his credentials are perfect for a win, so were Macca’s and Mark Allen’s and the list continues. For some it takes time. Beven may be like Chrissie and just run through the field OR it could be a learning experience. Kona is unique and everyone will bring their A game. It will be fun to see how it unfolds. I bet Crowie is on the podium this year. Llanos is my pick to be the winner, but Docherty is certainly one to watch.
I know what you are saying about Macca and Mark Allen taking some time. But I think Bevan is coming into this a lot older and I think he’s actually played in much more high pressure situations than either Macca or Mark Allen when they showed up for the initial rounds at Kona. Bevan is used to the “all or nothing” meat grinder of the 4 year Olympic cycle. The pressure really does not get much bigger than that in triathlon, when your “next chance” is “perhaps in 4 year” (or likely never). I think he’s a much better "big game"performer than either Mark or Macca were when they first started doing Kona.
I’m also guessing that the 2:49 run for Bevan in New Zealand was at the soft end of his abilities. He had no reason to run any faster that day. He’s probably capable of a 2:42-2:45 if he needs to fight it out.

If anybody but you Dev had written this I am 100% sure that somebody would have said
“What’s with all the Macca hate? Nobody gives him the credit he deserves! Waaaaaa!”
You make a solid point though. I think that Beven is going to go to the Big Island and either have an amazing performance or poop the bed royaly. Myself personally I am hoping he has a real Kona breakthrough

Nick, by the way, I should have titled this thread, “Bevan Docherty races HyVee on new stealth superbike”…probably get 200x the discussion than any discussion about the athletic side of this sport!!!
Also on no one winning IMNZ, IMOZ and coming back the same year to win Kona, I believe this also applies to anyone winning Roth or any European Ironman. There may have been a year with Pauli Kiuru won IMNZ and finished second to Mark Allen in Kona (I think the year Kiuru went 8:16).
LOL…I love Macca, and I want him to go to Kona and talk it up at machine gun speed. If Macca can hitch a ride with Docherty, I’ll personally be double pumped up. Docherty has 2 pieces of metal that Macca wanted but never got, so he can just as easily get inside Macca’s head as Macca getting inside his.

Haters gonna hate, there are the Macca haters, the haters of Macca haters, the haters of these who don’t know who Macca is,the haters of those who like to eat at Macca’s,the haters whose girlfriends call out “MACCA” in their sleep.
There is just so much hate…and it is awesome because he makes September and October so much more interesting.
Does Docherty have the plan to do the HyVee, Vegas, Kona triple? If so, how do you think that will affect him?

OK, we succeeded in derailing the Bevan Docherty thread with Macca talk. This is what happens in Sep and Oct…Macca inserts himself in every thread whether we like it or not (I kind of like it so felt comfortable putting the Macca bait in the thread, risking the eventual derailment). Using a US context, Macca is to triathlon in October what Reggie Jackson was to baseball.
OK, back to Docherty…anyone have his splits from HyVee?

This is what I see for start list: http://triathlon.competitor.com/2013/08/news/2013-ironman-70-3-world-championship-pro-start-list-announced_83198...not sure if those are race numbers, but they appear to be. I will also be interest to see what Ivan Rana pulls off in the double…he was pretty amazing at Cozumel.

Dev, it depends on how much he does his race and how much he races with/against the others. Dave Scott said that Kona is not about who goes the fastest, it is about who slows down the least. Beven must race his race, yet stay in some contact with the others. Can he let the strong cyclist go 10 minutes up the road and still know he can run them down? Will his nutrition work in the heat and wind? I am sure he has a plan, does he have a plan B and a plan C? Mentally, can he focus for 8 + hours?
You are right, he is seasoned. I do not disagree with you, but like always, we have to wait until race day.
I think the number one worry for all Kona pros is the course and conditions, and not one particular athlete. First and foremost they have to show up in top form, uninjured, pace correctly, eat and drink right for the day and their body, and hope to be on one of those magical days that athletes only have rarely. After all that is in place, and about 6 hours into the race, they will look around and see who is where and if tactics and gambling are now warranted. I don’t think they give two shits who has entered the race before hand, and what their resumes are. Too many giants have fallen there on race day to give much energy to anyone before it really begins to matter…
It is great for us to speculate though, and having Bevan in the race certainly will probably make it a more interesting race to watch. maybe. Just recently i thought Rasmus Henning was going to make the race a lot more interesting, but that never materialized. He had a very similar resume to Bevan, as did Spencer Smith, Andy Potts, and on and on…

I sincerely doubt that athletes wait until the run before they start thinking tactics. Whereas I agree with you that they probably don’t focus on any 1 specific athlete, but are paying attention to themselves and then the field. I think they go in with at least 3 race plans. 1. If happens, then I will do . 2. If , than I will do <that, but different>. Etc. Many of these scenarios have swim tactics (plans to stay with a specific pack), bike based tactics built in (where will they spend their watts), and run tactics (pacing and surging against the field).

Dev, the title said - and still says - pros better worry about Bevan, and when pros were discussed, it wasn’t welcome. Not cool.
If you wanted a Bevan fanboy thread, title it so, and we’d know. Otherwise, quityerbitchin about anyone else that might throw in opinions on another pro or whatev.
BTW, rooting for Bevan. I think he’d be a great add to wear the crown.
Just not great with starting threads that ask an innocuous question, with the answer already in mind. Call it what it is.
Carry on.

Of course they all go in with a plan and how to adapt to different scenarios. My point was that how they feel at those moments, dictates more on what they are going to do, not the plan. Looking back i probably should have said 4 hours into the race is where “some” begin to gamble and adjust to how others are racing. Most of the guys you will see on the podium probably won’t gamble that early, and hope their plans work in the end. And when i say adjust to others, i mean they are now taking a very negative risk to their overall finish to stay with the groups. Some folks can adjust speeds without much risk later one, so to me they are just still on their own targets, and not really racing head to head yet even though it appears so. After all the early gambles have failed, i do feel it is the 6 hour mark where the real racing head to head begins of the folks that are having those magical days and came well prepared.
Very true about Rasmus…I guess well need to wait for October…start list and resumes all are great for speculation for the next 6 weeks and then the rubber hits the QueenK and Kona god do their tricks.

Maybe I needed pink font on the part in bold as Nick and I are the Macca fanboys doing the derailing (hard to stay objective in September) ![]()
