Progress report on Jim's Knees

I've posting off and on about my progress since my knee surgeries this winter and spring. Well things are getting better fast and today I ran my first 5K race. My training runs just tipped under 8 minutes and when my wife suggested a 5K for today I couldn't resist. When I saw the clock at 1 mile at 7:17, I thought "this is really gonna hurt!" And it did. I finished in 22:47 for a 7:20 average. The race left my left knee, the major surgery, very sore but my right was fine. I'm feeling great! After all, it is really is all about the run. If all goes well this winter, I'll be back running 5K under 20:00 by spring and sprint tri's in 21 or 22 and I'll be happy as a clam as a short course triathlete!

Good for you. You’re on the way home.

But the much more important question - how is it feeling on the rides?

Cycling has never been a problem. They had me on the stationary bike at PT very early in the left knee rehab so I started on the trainer at home right after that. In April the Doc stopped me from running and cylcing again but the rehab was quick from the right knee surgery. Swimming is better than ever as it was the only thing I could do for a long time. Through the rehab I had to push off the wall with just one leg, first one then the other. I realize that now most of my training has to be on the bike not the run, that I have to avoid runs with long severe downhills, but that if I use my head I can regain speed and race successfully even at 55 yrs old!
