Bought Speedmax CF7 2025 (updated model with integrated cables) and a propertiary Canyon Hydration System. The bike is great, but the hydration system is spilling liquid all over the place through the refill hole on a bumps and i end up with half of the bike being sticky from my energy drink.
I wrote Canyon and they claimed no one else reported so, but were kind enough to replace the item - today i tested the new one and it’s the same issue.
Does anyone has an idea how to fix the problem? I’m also considering to return it, but the idea of the easy accessible hydration is great.
Absolute garbage that no one else has reported it, because I had the exact same issue and reached out to them for help.
I’m on a small frame and have wondered if that plays a role, or maybe you have to run the straw without the bite valve, but I havent had success yet. I’ve mounted a BTA cage instead. I thought about drilling a hole through the top of the fill port so it could breathe, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I used to use a profile bottle a bit like that, and used to get the sloshing out the top until I realised I was overfilling it. In that case there was a kind of fishing net mesh that was in the top 2" of the bottle neck, and the listed capacity took you to a notch below that. I was filling to the top of the mesh, which in hindsight was obviously too full.
Does the canyon one have anything under the rubber star slotted cap? And does the spillage happen when it’s only half full?
@Alexvanneste I was also trying mutiple setups, with the bite valve on and off, with liquid in the straw and without, with the same results unfortunately.
@Duncan74 I never noticed any fill mark on the canyon’s container, there is also nothing under this rubber star cap - it just sits in a hole and is locked by the top rubber covering it all. Regarding overfilling i was trying different volumes and declared 750 ml capacity is just under the rubber star cap. If i go down to like 450-500 ml it stops splashing of course, but then the capacity is too low in my opinion - i want the system to have approx 150-180g of liquid carbs for 70.3 distances. I can dissolve that in 750 ml, but not really in 450 ml.
@cyclenutnz i will get some fotos to share - anything particularly interesting for you to close up?
It would be helpful to have a picture of the whole system from the side and front, then a close up of the fill port area.
I can then share that with the development team to discuss whether there is a simple fix.
Thank you very much @cyclenutnz for taking the effort to help me (and others) to fix it. Here are the pictures from different angles, let me know please if anything else is needed:
Wow, that’s not a good design. I have the previous model CF SLX with the integrated hydration that is similar to that but instead of a cut grommet like that, mine has a solid plug that seals the opening. Here’s a couple pics…
It leaks out right of the middle of this star shaped cut cap. I tried to wrap it up with a foil but then my face muscles are too weak to suck the liquid out of the straw
The tip with foam filler to the star shaped cap may be a solution - actually the cap is two layered (there are two layers of this star shaped cut gum on the top and bottom of it) so filling the space between with kind of foam may prevent spilling yet giving airflow for the straw. Refill wont be easy then, nut i think i could survive without if can use full capacity of the container + bottle on the frame.
Nice tip, thank you @Callin, I will give it a try!
hi @cyclenutnz thanks for passing the images further, looking forward to the designer response. Thank you also for the armrest mount advise, will move that screw one place up to where you marked it should be.
Happy to report that tip from @Callin passed the kitchen test - i couldnt buy the Inner Cap but i murdered one of the fresh kitchen sponges and filled the space in the star-shaped cut cap - as i said, there are two layers on the cap with space between. Once the sponge is inside that space i can still drink trough straw easily, but heavy shaking didn’t cause any spilling. Will test it once it’s bit warmer over here, but the kitchen test brings hope to solve it.
BTW, maybe this is what we can also pass to the designer @cyclenutnz if you think it’s worth it.
thanks all and will report back once the road test is completed.
Another update - kitchen test passed, but took it today to the rode with the same upgrade working in the kitchen and unfortunately it leaks the same - splashes from the top and i found it’s also wet around, as it leaks perhaps from the hole where the straw goes in. And this is after few mins of riding on quite smooth cobblestone and maybe 2 half-centimetres curbs i have to go trough. Pictures below.
Is there any hope for it or should I return? I doesnt seems right that a peace of plastic which costs ~200 eur cant hold water properly…
In that top photo it looks like there is water 2cm up the straw above the top of the bottle? If that is the case then is it negative pressure in the straw (bite valve) or somehow positive pressure in the bottle?
Is that ‘flask’ mounted firmly or does it wobble? I’m not familiar with the Canyon specifically, but that gap between the upper part and lower part in the bottom photo doesn’t look quite right - Just wondering if that’s causing some excess movement that is related to the increased amount of fluid coming out the top.
The other thing I have done on mine is to add a bite valve (and on/off valve insert) so it’s not just an open straw. Got the idea from my endurance hydration pack. Works like a champ. Here are the 2 pieces I added…
@Duncan74 the water is in the straw is because I wanted to check if i can freely drink once the sponge is in the cover, never observed any negative pressure with it.
Regarding wobbling - yes it does a bit by design, there is a space petween the thing and the frame: Canyon even adds the transparent sticker to put on the frame in that place to protect the paintjob. The strange thing is that in the kitchen test i did a lot of shaking and it seems to leak only on the bike, so not sure if that little wobble does it, but will try to add a small bumper inbetween to elimate the move.
@TX83 why did you go with printed bite valve instead of the original, attached one? Or did you not have one on your previous SLX?
