Proactive labral tear treatment?

Hello ladies/gents,

My spine doc suspects that I have a hip labral tear based on symptoms (pinch when externally rotating + crunchy sound upon external rotation.) He had me do hip ROM to see if I was a candidate for inversion and recommended against it based on the findings as he said it could hurt my hip. I asked him about treatment and of course he doesn’t do hip stuff. At present my worst symptom is that right hip popping for a few days after a long run. I’m 40 and don’t want to be facing a hip replacement at 45 or 50 if I can do anything about this.

Thoughts? Is this really a concern? Should I be proactive and go to my GP and ask about a sports ortho referral? I know we have a lot of saavy ST’ers here, including nurses, PT’s, chiros, and MD’s, so I’m open to hear what you have to say. Thanks in advance.

Are you in any pain? Can you run normally? Is the hip preventing you from doing anything?

Strengthen your glutes. Devise a strength program to work your glutes 2-3 times a week.

(I had a labral tear fixed via surgery over 2 years)

No real pain (except toward end of range of external rotation.) Just a bunch of clicking and popping a few days after long runs. I do leg work that hits glutes (squats/leg press/deadlift), but no direct glute work.

Ok. I honestly wouldn’t trust a spine doctor to tell you about your hip. If your not in any major pain or discomfort, I doubt it’s worth seeing a hip specialist unless you really want a diagnosis.

Try clamshell exercises, bridges, side steps, etc… all with band. Activate activate activate the glutes.

The above has some good exercises for working on glute strength.
