Well, I enjoyed that. I appreciate President Obama’s tenor that places such confidence in our abilities while still requiring we own the responsibility for the problems we face. He suggests the answers and solutions lie with us, acknowledging they will not be easy. Very good.

Thanks for that overview. When the political banter gets ugly around here I’ll refer back to these words for inspiration.
If he has such confidence in our abilities, then why do we need trillions of dollars in redistribution? Why not trust our abilities and get government out of the way?
It’s our money anyway- raised collectively with taxation. It’s not like Washington raised the cash having a bake sale.

If this were a comment on his presidency, yes. I thought we were discussing his speech. Whole lot of hat, few if any cattle. That has been my concern with him from the beginning. He is a fascinating study in mass appeal with little to no substance.
Can you name any speech from any President (SOTU or similar type speech) that was heavy on details? That’s not what these speeches are for, especially given the scope of the issues Obama (or any President) faces.
I disagree on the nature and purpose of the speech. We are facing a situation that calls not for platitudes but plans. This speech was an extension of his campaign which was an extension of his political career: all hat, no cattle and it came at a time when we need a plan not just a check book. I am reminded of a Margaret Thatcher quote: “The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.”
I agree, although I would use “took” instead of “raise”.
Obama should act on his confidence in our ability, not take our money, and trust us to do what is right.
