Yeah, Lance spoke at length about that topic, as well, calling the supertuck stupidly dangerous. It’s a compromising position to be in while at speed on the bike.
And yet …

It’s hard to tell on here when people are being facetious or just…
That’s a normal tuck, because their hips have remained above the saddle, hence the reason their asses are sky high. Neither LA or GH were using droppers in that event, so to the point of this thread, they could have been more aero with a lower ass without resorting to a supertuck.
i have a feeling the supertuck will be banned before droppers come in tbh
.
there’s nothing unsafe about the supertuck
Very possible that this might happen.
But as soon as even one pro rider uses this to any advantage in a race, the UCI will promptly ban it, of that you can be assured.
It could present a safe alternative to the currently allowed supertuck. I don’t see them banning safety.
Ha! yeah right. I hope you’re being facetious. If not, the rider’s mass is significantly further forward compromising making sharp turns and sudden braking, and the movement to get out of a super tuck momentarily puts the rider’s mass even further forward before going up and back, and there’s the risk of snagging the nose of the saddle. To say that there is “nothing unsafe” fails to recognize that riding a bike is inherently unsafe, as the probability of injuring oneself is greater while on a bike than when sitting on a couch, and that the supertuck increases the probability of injury occurring.
I don’t know if EricM was serious or not, but the super tuck is like many other things on a bike - it has to be don’t correctly and at the right time. Then it about as safe as anything else, like riding a TT bike down a hill in aero.
to the point of the thread: it could be made safer with a dropper and then used more of the time, which would be faster.
Just as an anecdote, I rode the Horrible Hundred on my Cannondale F-Si last year which has a 27.2 dropper on it and Speed King tires. I couldn’t really keep up with groups on the flats but I had no problem at all keeping up on the climbs. Interestingly, on descents I was passing tons of people. I’d never descended like that before but my first thought was “I want this on my road bike!â€
Totally possible to do right now if you have a round 30.6 seat tube and eTap. I’d imagine we’ll see droppers in CX pretty soon.
They’re already in CX.
To the prior post, citing the post showing the Mavic SC bikes with droppers, I’d say they’ve already cleared the UCI and I 90% agree that the UCI will ban the supertuck soon and up my prediction that we’ll see at least one rider on a dropper for a key stage with a huge descent in the TdF next year… and further, I think it’ll be Nibali.
So, the super tuck advantage is real… as is the lack of safety of riding in a super tuck position: good luck if you need to apply the brakes suddenly or snag your shorts on your saddle when getting out of that position.
I predict that an integrated dropper (see the new BMC XC bike as an example) can be made to be lightweight and allow for a safe(r) supertuck where the rider can get their mass further back for more control, allowing for supertuck positions through switchbacks… I think we could see such technology adoption by at least a rider or two within three years

haha i came looking for this thread but you got your itoldaya in already. nice ![]()

Even though Nibs and a few more have experimented with it, I’ll still give you some kudos on that call. Its poetic that Mohoric, the guy who popularized the super tuck (NOT FROOME) and arguably one of the most incredible descenders in the peloton, used this to devastating effect. Insane and frightening fast.

Thanks for the link!
I’m saying: I’ll go through switchbacks with a dropper but never in a supertuck, so dropper wins. I talked to a custom bike builder about doing this and was told he didn’t think it was needed. I didn’t go that route needless to say. I’d like to see something like the eightpins or BMC RAD dropper for road so I can sent the post up and down by remote and also make micro adjustments to fit, and add 10cm suspension in the dropper while we’re at it.
This thread was so confusing as I had no idea what a Dropper Seatpost was. Maybe put that in the title? I was looking for handlebars and again, was confused.

Bruh.
Cycling News has a great story about Mohoric’s dropper post: https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/mohoric-ive-destroyed-cycling-now-everyone-will-use-a-dropper-post/

One thing I couldn’t see in the video coverage was him really using it, but then he also went with such little travel. I’d go full slam, that way when it’s too steep to pedal, could get really low, especially in switch backs - whip that rear wheel around motocross style. Enve put out a mechanical 10mm road dropper last year. Again, I’d go near full drop, and as low as a super tuck but safer with weight further back.

Should also explain that Grand Tour is not referring to the automotive TV series. And what is a MohoriÄ anyway? I couldn’t find anything about it on any lists of eastern European pastries.

Now yours I know should be in pink. I don’t mountainbike or much gravel. Grant Tour would be some budget series that PBS bought the rights to if it was an automotive TV show, but the ratings would be behind reruns of Huel Howzer’s California Gold.
I exclusively road/tri bike and don’t follow racing or tech for mtb, either. Thought dropper posts are common knowledge.
Should your comment about Grand Tour be in pink? Lol
