whats the best formula to estimate full ironman time based upon a half time?
Mas o menos…half iron time * 2= IM time.
Welcome to slowtwitch btw.
Half-Ironman time x 2-plus 1 hour is the general rule of thumb.
5:30 1/2 = 12:00 full

There is no formula that works. The two distances are very different and require very different training.

Yup - the general guideline (provided you get the training done and execute is)
1/2 IM * 2 + 1 hour
.
Well my last half IM (about 5 weeks prior to IM CDA) took 6 hours and I went just under 11:40 at IM CDA - so sometimes you can go faster at longer races…but the half had more vertical than the full…
Seriously - the pro’s obviously don’t slow very much and lots of AG’er and even some pro’s slow down a lot more than 2x+1…
Assuming about a 10-11 hour IM - I think the 2x+1 is about an ideal IM prediction as most lose at least 30 minutes on the run and about another 30 minutes on swim/bike/T’s…
Best half IM for me: 4:50 (very easy course). Best IM 11:40.

I’ve heard the following formula (similar to the others):
(1/2IM time x2) + 1 to 2 hours…the variable being your experience at the full IM distance…rookies tend to be closer to the 2 hour mark…younger, fitter and more experienced folks tend closer to the 1 hour variance…
YMMV…
