PowerTap Pro Issue

I have searched and read a few of the PowerTap Pro threads and I think something similar is going on with my new PowerTap. Any help would be appreciated.

So I set PT Pro up last week on my Aegis Victory Road Bike. Followed the directions step by step. I ride to the Golden Gate Bridge coming from Mill Valley and there is a slight climb- Power output is something like 700! Damn I’m powerful! So I get home and learn about the torque zeroing out thing and sure enough, I’m not that powerful and calibrate the unit. I have since ridden 3 times and had to zero out the torque before each ride and DURING each ride atleast once a ride. Speed reads fine, cadence reads fine, HR reads fine- power reads high and jumps around a sporatically. I also feel as though the hub is sticky, and notice this very much when the road tilts up. I am no great climber, but this wheel feels as the the brakes are rubbing or it rubbing on the frame- it’s not, I’ve checked and double checked. I just want to know if it’s the hub or the computer or the cradle unit.

Also note, my roomate has one and he is a stronger cyclist. I out weigh him by 10 lbs. We were riding side by side and my Power was nearly twice his. I also happen to have another brand spaken new PT Pro right here next to me- being sold to a friend- and I “tested” that wheel and computer head and same readings and my funky one. This leads me to beleive it’s the cradle, but the wires are all in great shape- no excessive tighness or anything.

Stumped and a bit frustrated. Let me know what you think?

You might start by calling Graber, they’ve always been very helpful with me.

The hubs have traditional cones and balls, rather than the cartridge bearings everyone is used to nowadays. Cones need to be precisely adjusted, and they can get out of whack coming out of the factory and with changes in weather, etc.

First, call Graber. If it is likely the the cones, then take it to a reputable bike shop and have them adusted.

My wheel developed a little “dragging” feeling. I adjusted the cones and it’s good as new.

Its a good thing too that Graber’s Customer Service is as stellar as it is…

I got my PT Pro back last week—not bad–3 week turn around on my faulty hub.

It works now, and I dont know how i ever rode without it before.

Pull off the battery cover and look to see the the curcuit board is red. The red boards are faulty and you will need to send it back. Expect A VERY FREEKN LONG TURN AROUND TIME. They’ve had my wheel for the last four weeks.

Good luck.

Yep- I got the dredded red board. Bummer. Thanks for your input.

I have the power tap…how do i go about removing the battery cover on the bike…What special tool do i need? and can i mess it up if i do…thanks kevin

You need a philips screwdriver. You then remove the two screws from the yellow cap (PT Pro) or black cap.

What do you know…my wheel that they’ve had for a month and was supposed to be turned around in five days still hasn’t arrived. And to think that last Thursday they said it would be sent out next day on Friday.

Makes me regret buying two PT’d wheels instead of spending a few extra bucks for a SRM.

I’ve heard “it’ll be sent out tomorrow” about 5 times over the past couple weeks. Now they say its fixed but they have to wait for someone to do something to test that it is indeed fixed and that’ll take until next Tuesday…maybe…

I received almost the same line.

I think it takes an allen wrench. Yes. You can mess it up if you don’t follow the directions. When you put the cover back on, DO NOT tighen even one half turn more than what’s recommended by the manual. If you do, you risk getting really screwy readings.
