Today I did a sprint triathlon and my P1 pedals didn’t connect with my Elemnt Bolt head unit for the whole bike leg. The head unit found the speed sensor only. The pedals have fresh batteries that were confirmed in the Powertap App and I tested the setup yesterday with a ride and it worked just fine.
Just before the race began I powered up the Bolt, hit the “start” button and then left for the swim portion. This was my second race and at my first race everything worked just fine. After the race was over I tested the head unit and could see that it was getting a signal from the pedals. Maybe I’m missing something.
Is there a “best practices” workflow that I should use so this doesn’t happen again?
I’ve noticed with my Element Bolt that if the sensor is not active when I start the ride, it won’t pick it up mid-ride (I use a P2M, but I presume what I do would work for you).
I changed my Power Save settings for Auto Shut Down to the maximum; 2 hours. Then before I leave transition I activate the power meter, HRM, and what ever sensors I’m using, turn on the head unit and start the ride. You end up with a lot of “Cafe Time”, but all your data is there.
I must have inadvertently started the head unit without the pedals still active. Thanks for the help!
Over a year ago, I did a multisport race here in town where my ELEMNT functioned as I expected picking up my power meter and heart rate sensor when I got to my bike probably an hour after I had racked my bike in the transition area.
Just last week (and obviously a number of firmware updates since last year) I had done my warmup for a crit, ended that ride, and put my bike on the rack waiting for my race. About 15 minutes later when we were doing our warm up laps, my ELEMNT did not pick up my power meter or my heart rate sensor until I restarted the ELEMNT.
I wouldn’t be surprised if their is a bug in the firmware that causes issues with discovering ANT+ devices after they have been discovered and then go inactive or out of range.
