I decided that my PT computer won’t talk to my Windows XP laptop (no 9-pin serial ports) using the USB download cable & the Power-Tap Link software. Ain’t happening.
So I downloaded and installed the USB drivers and Poweragent 7.0 software. Poweragent almost finishes loading, then a Java error window pops up & halts the process: “A java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError exception has occurred.”
Surely I can’t be the only one who’s encountered this problem. Any advice before calling customer service in the morning? Thanks.
I have an older powertap that I bought on e-bay last year which has the same serial connection. I could not get it to work with their software either. I ended up downloading software from cyclingpeaks and it works perfectly. It is much better than the stock software anyway.
Have you selected the right port from the main CyclingPeaks window (click “CyclingPeaks WKO+ Home” on the left menu bar)? If you are connected through USB, look for the COM port that says COMxx (USB Serial Port).
Also, make sure the “training device type” is set to Power-Tap
“HOST” is what you want displayed on the PT. That means it’s in “communicate with PC” mode.
I had this issue with my PT 2.4 and called Customer Service for PowerTap. They told me the CD’s had issues and to simply download the latest software from their website. 3 mins of downloading and one rebooting later the PT software worked great.
That’s the fix. Both pieces of software needs to be downloaded from their site. It’s free and only takes a few minutes. I figured this out the same way you did. I know from experience “Take a deep breath”. It’ll all work out. See my other post on the PT and I suggested this software suggestion.
