Powertap computer options

I’m riding with a wireless powertap (ANT+), and looking to get a new head unit. I like the ones that come with it, but I don’t need/want to see speed the whole time, and I would like to be able to change what is visible. I’d like to have power/cadence/time available for interval work, and power/cadence/avg power elsewhere. It also needs to have significant battery life (several months) so I don’t have to worry about it; that knocks the Garmin stuff out. Is there anything?

You could start by changing the display fields on the PT headunit to do just that.

You did read the manual and understand how you can change them, right?

Ummm…are you planning on downloading the data?

If you are, then this point is moot since the 705 recharges through the USB port whenever you plug it in. In the nearly 1 year I’ve used the 705, I’ve NEVER had to worry that the battery was charged enough.

If you aren’t going to download, then IMHO why bother with the PM?

The only thing is…with the yellow head unit, he can’t display BOTH current power and average power at the same time…but, to be fair, it’s really just quick 2 clicks of the right button (IIRC) to go from current power to average and then one more click to get back to current. So, really not that big of a deal at all in the end.

The Garmin 705 is what you want if completely setting up your “perfect” view is worth $500 to you.

7 clicks to get to time, then another click to get back to cadence. I’m looking for something that shows them simultaneously. As for power/avg power, 6 clicks to move the cursor up, switch, and move it back down (i’m changing the bottom line too, remember?). Is it impossible or a huge pain? no. I’d still prefer to be able to see it all at once. IMO it’s pretty dumb of the saris to not make all of the fields customizeable. I could care less about speed while riding.

The middle field can be changed to always show cadence instead of speed. Read the manual.

That’s right! Which means his “interval” preference is attainable (i.e. power, cadence, and time all displayed concurrently) while, as I described above, it’s 2 simple clicks of the right button to go from power to average power and one click to get back to power (assuming you leave the selection arrows in the top row).

Wow…reading the manual can save a lot of money!

That feature is on section ‘4’ of the menu, which is not on the Elite+ version, which I have. That’s what I get for getting the cheap option.

Wow…I didn’t realize that. There are a LOT of setup options you don’t have (menus 2,3, and 4 aren’t available on the Elite+). Heck, you would’ve been better off with a Comp hub and computer. You’d have ALL the setup options available, it’s 50g lighter, and it’s $400 cheaper. Who cares if you have to put a harness on the bike?
