Powertap bearing tech Q

ok got a good deal? on a powertap pro (150 for hub, wires, software, head unit, open pro rim!) but it’s in pieces.

manual/saris says not to replace the non-drive side bearing yourself. Any reason I can’t buy a new cartridge bearing for 10 bucks, stick it in the freezer, and pop it in?

I understand they’re good people and their customer service is top notch, just trying to avoid shipping hassles/costs.

I think the main concern would be the effect on the torque tube that contains the strain guages, but if the old bearing is already removed I dont see it would hurt. My concern would be the damage done to the unit by the previous owner dismantling it.

They do pretty good customer service, and fairly fast. I just had mine completely rebuilt and it cost me a little over 100 bucks. They did replace the axle, freehub, both bearings, the cover and seals. Runs really well right now.

I think I will send it in for some prophylactic service at the end of each season from now on, I am hoping they also put some of those nice silicone coated circuit boards inside and my days of water penetration disasters are over, but I am not hopefull…

cool thats what I was thinking, the bearing surface area looks OK to me…although there is a small scratch it looks/feels inconsequential. Bearing’s in the freezer right now i’ll find out if it works soon enuff.
