My PowerTap doesnt seem to be reading correctly. My watt reading is really low, even when I sprint or push hard. I tried to recalibrate but it did not fix the problem.
Anyone have this problem? How can I fix?
Thanks!

Has it read correctly in the past? IOW’s, is this a new phenomenon? How do you know it’s not reading correctly. By recalibrate you mean zero the torque? Is it a 2.4? Have you checked the batteries? How old is the unit? Did you buy it off of ebay?
It did correctly in the past, I know because I was on a computrainer and the readings were consistent and comparable. I just purchased the unit in december, its new, is powertap pro. Readings are wrong, they dont move when I apply more torque. Would the battery need to replaced after six months?
I would think it would be the first thing I would do. When I received mine I had to replace the batteries. It’s not difficult. I don’t know if it was from movement of the hub while sitting for sale or what but replacing the batteries in mine was necessary. I forget what the manual says but yes I think six months would definitely call for a battery change.
I’d change both the computer and the hub just to eliminate possibilities.
Is it difficult to change the hub battery?
No, easy. Small hex wrench. The batteries are cheap too. Don’t over tighten the cap.
I would call saris first (don’t email, they are very slow to respond).
They were very good with phone support.
The first thing they’ll ask “did you change the batteries”? Will be good technical support however if you’re unsure of the procedure.
did you reset the torque to Zero? I find that sometimes has my power off, mostly on my trainer. most of my low readings are on my trainer.
If I was able to change the batteries and regrease the cap anyone can do it. I touch stuff and it blows up.
Call Saris if it doesn’t fix the issue…they are VERY knowledgeable and give good service.

I was getting the low readings on the trainer! I was on the road today and it seemed to be reading correctly.
For most folks, your watts on the trainer will always be lower. You’re simply not working as hard as you should. Nothing wrong with you, but that’s a big reason why the trainer sucks.

I completely agree.
The PE seems all out of whack on the trainer.

We agree on something, what a day! ![]()
Actually, on the trainer you don’t have all of the counterveiling aerodynamic forces as you do on the road. While your speed on the trainer is higher, your watts are lower simply becaues you’re not working as hard. The trainer is a useful instrument when the weather does not permit you to get outside, but it is not a replacement for cycling outdoors.
well that is good to know. i thought i was the only one that had lower watts on the trainer way lower. I attributed to the fact that i don’t use a fan. when riding my trainer i just like to do intervals and i am drenched as soon as i finish my warm up and do my first interval. But it would always get me how my watts would be so much lower on the trainer than on the road. i figured i was tired every time i was on the trainer and also because i don’t use the fan my body heats up, I use that as a stress because it could be really hot on the bike, you never know. But i guess know it is just a normal thing to have lower watts on the trainer with a higher PE.
Now I know.
