Which would you rather have a bike based power meter or a trainer based one?

Here is my thought…

I would take the trainer based one because on a trainer you don’t have to worry about traffic, dogs or weather and you can get the most out of key workouts.

Bike based powermeters (SRM, PT) work very-well on stationary trainers (fluid, mag or wind)… and will give you power-data on the road (to match it w/ indoors) for a much needed perfect pacing!

Bike-based wins this one hands-down, Tibbs. As another poster noted…you can still use the bike based powermeters on stationary trainers.

I’ve owned both types. Its far…FAR better to be able to ride with power on an everyday basis than one or two times a week. And outside of hurricane weather, at this time of the year, you’d be hard pressed to keep me inside anyway…

I’d get my life and finances together prior to purchasing anything like a power meter.

I use both - SRM on the road and trainer but also have a Tacx Flow trainer that provides wattage info (although the 2 seem to differ a bit on the lower end - the Tacx reports higher low end / low intensity wattages than the SRM but the margin narrows on high intensity efforts)

if you use the same on the trainer and road the advantage is the comparability of the values
