Powder Coating a Titanium Bike?

I just recieved a new Litespeed Blade. Well, it is sitting in the box at my LBS. I was considering Getting it Powdercoated BLACK.

Question: Will the heat associated w/ powdercoating screw up the titanium or welds?

Question #2: What aero bars should I get, I dont like the ones that came with it and since I just spent way to much money on the bike I better be happy with the end product. I am not paying $2,500 for the Oval’s

Answer to # 2:

You don’t have to spend $2500 for aerobars. That’s ludicrous. You can get some perfectly functional Blackwell bars for around $1200.

Yes 2500 is ludicrous, $1200 is better, but i will probably go for something around $500
.

Why powdercat? It’s too expensive and difficult to get it off when it come time to do so. Titanium is very durable. That being said, ti will more than likely powdercoat fine.

How 'boot this: have someone bend you up a pair of Scott 100K bars? That would certainly be different…

I was told I could get it done for around $200 or less. This may be wrong. I guess I will worry about taking it off later. Thank you for the input

I am pretty sure the powder coating process would not screw up a ti bike. Get in touch with Spectrum Powercoating in Colorado Springs, they do fantastic work and would be able to answer your question about powdercoating ti.

Why not get the A900 bars from Oval? They are quite a bit less expensive and are very nice and adjustable.

Bunny was thinking it is expensive to get the powdercoat off not on. Spectrum does a really nice job. Powdercoat is a very durable finish is one reason to do it, but getting it off is a bitch.

Powder coating is cheap as chips to have applied, just really nasty (i.e. expensive) to remove.

Getting the powdercoat off of an old GT Vengeance took a lot of time and $$$.

Just curious… Are you getting it powdercoated because you want a black bike, or because you want a more durable finish to prevent scratches, or what?

And, on a similar note. Does anyone know how many grams an average powdercoat adds to a bike’s weight?

I actually asked “why?” Ti needs nothing, except anti-seize on any place that has aluminium in or on it. I guess the dude wants black.

If no one else will say it, I will.

Have you lost your mind???

Why in the world would you powder coat that frame?

Back when Litespeed used to paint I seen some titanium frames painted and it was beautiful. Im sure powder coating will give similar results.
Like others said Spectrum http://www.spectrumpowderworks.com/ does good work so check them out.

I will second what march66 said “Have you lost your mind” …just kidding of course, but why would you want to cover up the nice ti look.

Cheers

I left the office and came back to all the reply’s. thanx for the input. I have a Sabre which is Ti also and I had Litespeed paint it yellow. I liked the fact that my bike was different from the other litespeeds around.

I was out doing some homework and have decided no powdercoating for me. I really wanted it to be black and Litespeed forgot to paint it. Atleast they forgot to charge me for the paint also. I found out that the powdercoat would add approx. 5 lbs. so no paint for me. I was also looking into getting it polished but that wasnt going to change the look enough for me. So now I have a Blade w/ no decals, because I tore them off. OOPs

Hello,

Did you mean 5 lbs or 0.5 lbs. 0.5 lbs would be more like it and thats on the heavy side. Stripping it off later won’t be as bad as an aluminum bike (very difficult), or steel (somewhat difficult). Generally (very generally) speaking paint (powder coating included) doesn’t stick as well Ti as steel or aluminum. If your main desire is to have something different I’ve got two suggestions. One friend has a Ti frame that has a matte bead blasted finish with flames and logos polished into the frame. Very subtle, and different, don’t know who did the work. The second is Leni Fried at ONE-OFF titanium. She will custom anodize your ti frame. anything from putting on you name to wild and permanent custom cartoons. Truly artwork.

There was a nametag thread a while back, and I posted a sweet article from popular science about anodizing titanium yourself. It doesn’t look too hard.

The full article, including pictures and directions for doing this can be found at:

It has some pretty cool pics. If I had a Ti bike I would definately get some sweet blue anodized flames on it, pronto.

Thanks guys for the input. I am definately going to look into the anodize thing. That seems pretty cool and actually what I was looking for. I dont know about artwork, but to give the bike a darker look w/o paint would be interesting.

I wonder how long it would take and how consistant it would look to do it my self as per the article that Bendavis linked in the his reply.

Thanx again

You would need a vat large enough to anodise for a truly consistent look. Red is the hardest colour to do (almost unachievable, in my blunt opinion).

I am glad you listened to us about not powder coating it.

That looks REALLY cool. I wish that I had not read that article. My TiPhoon I getting a Flame job for sure now.
