Potential New Summer Olympic Sports

If you had to pick one, which would it be? I’d go with BB/softball, although since during Summer likely would not be any MLB players, just college, minors and old dudes on their way out. Flag football is a bit of a reach. Cricket probably the most popular wordwide but man those games take forever.

The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic games proposed the following sports for inclusion in the 2028 Olympics: Baseball/softball, flag football, cricket, lacrosse and squash. The IOC will consider those proposals and make a decision on which sports will be added to the 2028 Olympics on Oct. 16.

I want to see Cyclocross make it into the Olympics, whether as a winter or as a summer sport.

I know this is a triathlon forum but I’d also like to see some sort of non-drafting Triathlon. Call it Long course or something and have it at the PTO or 70.3 distance.

Paint Ball,
Dodge Ball
Lawn Jarts (with '70s metal spike jarts)
Tag (watched that on ESPN, pretty crazy)
Darts
.

Cornhole
.

Softball!!!

the cricket proposed is 20/20 so the games are pretty quick, and i understand the appeal with the popularity certain countries, but i don’t like adding sports where winning an olympic gold medal is not the pinnacle of the sport…and in cricket it is unlikely to be prized more than one of the multiple world cups. i know there are loads of sports where winning a major, grand slam, world series, NBA title, TDF is bigger than the Olympics already, butt no need to add more.

Flag football as an olympic sport seems a bit ridiculous - does any other country play?

How about MTB downhill. Seems a bit unfair that the XC folks get to go to the Olympics but not downhill.

Flag football is too US centric. T20 cricket would be good, played by many different countries.

If there are any non western sports, played by multiple countries, I would like to see them included.

There definitely needs to be additional sports like kangaroo racing, crocodile wrestling, beach flags, open water swims chased by sharks, Australian Rules Football, …

Softball!!!

+1 never should have been dropped. If they need to make room, relegate one of the X-Games events.

I’m in. I propose dropping skateboarding. Yes, it’s a great event and takes incredible skill, but it has a home in the X-Games.

So, which cycling event do we drop to allow for the inclusion of cyclocross or downhill MTB? I’m pretty sure it’s a zero-sum proposition for cycling as a sport. If they add an event, they have to drop one to accommodate it.

It wouldn’t surprise me if it were a similar stipulation for triathlon. ODT or Long Course. Which does the sport want as its showcase? And historically the IOC hasn’t been too fond races that last several hours.

An Olympic village can only accommodate so many athletes, (and coaches, and support staff, and…)

I’m probably going against the grain here, but I eagerly anticipated Tokyo’s inclusion of skateboarding (park much more so than street), surfing, freestyle BMX and climbing. For me, none disappointed and produced some of the competitive and viewing highlights of the Games.

Softball and baseball lack the global appeal of cricket. The T20 version of the cricket has revolutionised cricket’s marketability and has been integral in the burgeoning professionalism of the women’s game on an international level. It wouldn’t surprise me if in 10 years time, T20 cricket is second only to soccer as the most popular team sport in the world.

Is women’s softball a professional sport anywhere in the world, even the US?

How many countries is softball played in?

2020 cricket is genuinely just fun, watching people basically hit home runs non stop for an entire match is very entertaining

Rugby 7’s, not my thing, but entertaining

Get rid of karate and / twd and put in bjj

I agree with adding cricket is some form. I don’t know enough about it, which is why I love olympic sports. It’s an opportunity every 4 years to watch and learn about sports I do not normally get to see. A very US centric view, I know. If I want to watch skateboarding, I just need to spend 10 minutes outside the local mall and I’ll get my fill.

Rugby 7s has been in since Rio. I can’t see it being dropped.

Ironically it almost made its debut in London, but squash (which is now pushing to be readmitted) and karate (which you’d like to see dropped) got the nod instead.

Wondering, what sport do you think winning the Gold medal is the pinnacle of the sport?

Most sports have their Yearly world championship, (some / many/all?) cancel it for the olympic year, but not sure if that makes winning the gold the pinnacle at least within that sport. Sure you get more attention from people who don’t follow the sport, but that doesn’t make it the pinnacle.

The US and Japan and Europe and maybe Australia have professional softball. I’m not sure if anywhere else does. The sport is growing quite a bit internationally. In the US the college World Series had larger viewership and was picked up on major networks. It was the highest growth revenue sport in the ncaa last year due to the tv contracts that had better viewership than projected).

The Olympic Charter indicates that in order to be accepted, a sport must be widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents and by women in no fewer than 40 countries and on three continents. From: https://www.britannica.com/story/how-are-sports-chosen-for-the-olympics

I don’t think they realize what a boon it would be for advertisers in America if they put Dodgeball on at prime time.

I would be all for an adult dodgeball league. We play it with the kids at hockey practice. That is the best station to be on while coaching.

Bike polo. Got some traction late 00s, early 2010s. Perhaps it would play to the hipster crowd. Would be great to see it grow. My adopted home town of milwaukee won worlds during that time.

i think there are loads of sports where the Olympics is the pinnacle, particularly those that were traditionally amateur until relatively recently …track and field (olympics rated much higher than worlds - although closer when the worlds were also every 4 years), swimming, rowing, track cycling for example. For the ITU triathlon competitors i am sure an Olympic gold is valued more than being world champion for a year.
There has been this creep over the past few cycles of either sports being added that already have well established pinnacles of achievement (golf quite recently, tennis returned in 1988 for example) or participation in a current olympic sport being widened to include players who compete yearly for things valued more highly than an olympic gold (i think most NBA players (and fans) would value an NBA title more than olympics; and cyclists rank the olympic road race, at least for the men, somewhere below a monument and way lower than a grand tour). But i can see the other side. When sports exclude the best (as they do in men’s soccer) interest drops considerably.

The NFL claims that over 70 countries play flag football. I suspect that in all 70 countries it is a more fringe sport than that sport they talk about on the other forum.

Cricket is played in 108 countries and is the main summer sport, for men, in at least 12 countries. 1.5 billion fanatical Indians can’t be wrong. Womens cricket in Australia is becoming very high profile and being televised, not sure about other countries.

Australian Rules Football might struggle to meet the criteria. However they should consider renaming it World Series Australian Rules Football.
